Red Sox Cut Fast Fan Favorite to Activate Adley Rutschman

The Boston Red Sox immediately look better on paper with Adley Rutschman set to debut.

The Adley Rutschman era with the Boston Red Sox will officially kick off on Tuesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The excitement has been building over the last few days. Rutschman went on a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend and did enough for the Red Sox to have the All-Star catcher join the club on their trip to Toronto. On Monday, Rutschman went through a workout and after the game, interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed that the All-Star would be making his team debut on Tuesday night.

The move has been confirmed. Rutschman has been activated off the Injured List and will make his Boston debut on Tuesday night while batting third. In response, Boston designated catcher Jake Rogers for assignment and moved Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the 60-Day Injured List, per MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

"Adley Rutschman active. Jake Rogers DFA'd," Cotillo wrote. "Isiah Kiner-Falefa moves to the 60-day IL, which opens a 40-man spot separately."

When it comes to Rogers, he caught the attention of Red Sox Nation in his short time with the team after coming over in the Rutschman deal with the Baltimore Orioles. Rogers played in three games and slashed .500/.556/.833 with a 1.389 OPS, two doubles and two RBIs. Now, of course, this is an extremely small sample size. Rogers went 3-for-6 in his three outings with Boston.

In his short time with Boston, he did everything right. He was good offensively, he caught Payton Tolle's 14-strikeout masterpiece against the Athletics and the fans loved him right away, clearly.

I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Jake Rogers would be DFA’d, just serving as a temporary backup catcher to bridge the gap until Rutschman comes back, but he has at least made this decision unclear with how well he’s played. The fanbase quickly got attached to Rogers, to say the least.

With the move, the Red Sox will roll with Rutschman and Connor Wong for the foreseeable future. It would be surprising to see another catcher move made this season, barring an injury. Maybe when rosters expand in September you could promote someone like Mickey Gasper to be a utility man, but the Red Sox appear to be set at the position.

That's certainly a far cry from where they were at any other point this season. That's what Rutschman brings to the table. He's a superstar behind the plate and Boston clearly has high hopes for him batting him third in the order right away.

Now, Rutschman's in the picture. Imagine what this club is going to look like when Roman Anthony is able to return to the lineup as well? Boston has been on a special run and yet it's getting even better. Rutschman is another legit All-Star bat for the middle of the order. The same can be said about Anthony. This team looks like a real contender.
