Reds Get Tough Injury News After Initially Thinking They Caught Major Break

What initially looked like a major break for Michael Toglia and the Cincinnati Reds has taken an unfortunate turn.

Toglia will undergo surgery on his dislocated right shoulder after all, according to Charlie Goldsmith. The news is disappointing after the Reds initially received encouraging news following the injury.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury Friday night against the Diamondbacks when his shoulder popped out of place while making a diving grab in left field. X-rays came back negative, and Toglia said afterward that he wasn't experiencing any pain once the shoulder was put back into place.

Reds manager Terry Francona also expressed some optimism following the game, saying there was a chance Toglia could be OK despite how concerning the injury initially looked.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The Reds placed Toglia on the 10-day injured list on Sunday and recalled Ivan Johnson from Triple-A Louisville. Now, with surgery required, Toglia's season appears to be over.

After being promoted from Triple-A Louisville, Toglia played in just 10 games for the Reds, slashing .115/.179/.192 with two extra-base hits.

JJ Bleday made some history in Saturday night’s 11-5 win over the Diamondbacks, becoming just the eighth player in Reds history to hit for the cycle and the first since Elly De La Cruz in 2023. Bleday doubled in the first, tripled in the third, singled in the fourth and capped it off with his 21st home run of the season in the sixth.

It was also the first time a Reds player hit for the cycle on the road since Heinie Groh did it all the way back in 1915.

Bleday's 21 home runs are also a career high.

Chase Burns Takes the Mound in San Francisco

Chase Burns is set to take the mound in the Reds' opener against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. The right-hander is 14-2 with a 2.51 ERA this season.

Burns has 19 allowed two runs or fewer in 19 of his 24 starts this season, becoming the first Reds pitcher since 1900 to accomplish that feat. He also allowed two runs or fewer in 12 straight starts from April 16 through June 21, matching Edinson Volquez’s 2008 mark for the longest streak by a Reds pitcher since 1900.

His 216 strikeouts through his first 32 career starts are the second-most by a Reds pitcher over that span since 1900, trailing only Nick Lodolo, who had 221.
