Kyle Freeland Injury Triggers MLB Debut for Rockies Prospect Mason Adams

The Colorado Rockies made a move on Monday that will set up a new prospect to make his MLB debut on Tuesday.

Colorado placed starting pitcher Kyle Freeland on the 15-day injured list with a pinched nerve in his neck. The Rockies officially called it cervical radiculopathy.

To give Colorado an additional arm on Monday, they selected the contract of pitcher Blake Adams. But it’s another Adams coming to the Majors that is more intriguing.

To take Freeland’s place in the rotation, the Rockies are going to start the clock on Mason Adams’ MLB career. He’ll take the ball on Tuesday, per MLB.com’s Thomas Harding.

Mason Adams’ move is not official yet. He’ll need to be added to the 40-man roster on Tuesday before he can pitch.

Mason Adams was part of the return the Rockies received when they traded outfielder Brenton Doyle to the Chicago White Sox before the MLB trade deadline. When he landed with the Rockies, he became their No. 20 prospect per MLB Pipeline.

Adams has made three starts with Triple-A Albuquerque since joining the organization and has a 2.08 ERA but hasn’t been involved in a decision. He struck out 13 and walked three in 13 innings. He tossed five innings in his last start and allowed three hits and one earned run as he struck out four.

The White Sox selected Adams in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB draft out of Jacksonville University. He got a cup of coffee in the White Sox organization in 2022 but started his pro career in earnest in 2023 by pitching for three different affiliates, reaching Double-A Birmingham before the end of the season. He combined to go 6-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 games, with 13 starts, as he struck out 125 and walked 29 in 109 innings.

In 2025 he reached Triple-A Charlotte for the first time after he put together a brilliant campaign at Birmingham (7-5, 2.44, 101 strikeouts). He struggled at Charlotte, where he had a 5.82 ERA in five starts and wasn’t involved in a decision. He struck out nine and walked nine in 17 innings.

His work with Albuquerque stands out as his best performance at Triple-A. Earlier this season at Charlotte he went 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA in nine games (seven starts) as he struck out 36 and walked 17 in 36 innings.

In 66 minor league games (50 starts), he is 16-14 with a. 3.17 ERA with 300 strikeouts and 80 walks in 295 innings.
