Jac Caglianone Stays Red-Hot, Bobby Witt Jr. is Back: Royals Stock Up, Stock Down

Welcome to “Stock Up, Stock Down,” where every week, the Royals On SI staff writers highlight Kansas City Royals players who have stood out or had a rough week. From the lineup to the pitching staff, we’ll dive into who is trending up and who is trending down.

The Royals went 2-4 over the past week, picking up wins against the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins while also dropping games to both teams, along with their most recent loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Stock Up: Players Who Stood Out Over the Past Week

Jac Caglianone

Jac Caglianone is the most obvious player whose stock is sky-high. He has been magma hot, slashing .481/.481/.926 with a 1.407 OPS, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 25 total bases.

The 23-year-old had a phenomenal game against the Cubs, hitting two home runs and two doubles. That trend continued against the Dodgers on Monday, when he collected two hits, including a home run off new Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal.

Bobby Witt Jr.

It has been one week since Bobby Witt Jr. was reinstated from the 10-day injured list, and it’s safe to say he is back like he never left. This marked the first injured list stint of Witt’s major league career.

Since returning, the superstar shortstop has slashed .320/.414/.400 in 25 at-bats while scoring seven runs. Witt continues to prove time and time again why he is one of the most talented players in baseball.

Noah Cameron

While Noah Cameron didn’t have his best stuff in his latest outing against the Dodgers, he still went 5 2/3 innings against one of the league’s most talented lineups. But over the past week, Cameron has really started to turn his season around.

The 27-year-old has recently started calling his own pitches, which seems to be an underlying factor in his recent success. Over the last seven days, he has logged 13 2/3 innings while allowing five earned runs, four of which came in Monday’s outing, while also striking out 11 batters.

Stock Down: Players Who Struggled Over the Past Week

Carter Jensen

Rookie catcher Carter Jensen has seemingly been dealing with a slump at the plate as of late. Over 20 at-bats this past week, he is slashing .100/.280/.250 with eight strikeouts.

Jensen has proved to be a key piece of the Royals’ future this season. From his impressive debut month last September to his strong stretches this season, the rookie is simply dealing with an unfortunate slump at the plate.

Isaac Collins

Isaac Collins also had a rough week offensively. Over 21 at-bats, he slashed .143/.217/.190. The switch-hitter is in his first season with Kansas City after being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers this past offseason.

Coming off his best month of the season in July, when he slashed .276/.353/.500, the start of August has been a rocky one for Collins. The hope is that he can turn things around and end the season on a high note.

Daniel Lynch IV

While Daniel Lynch IV’s sample size over the past week is very small, it is still worth noting. Lynch was recently added to the rotation in hopes of helping the group, but his first start of the season did not go as planned.

Lynch logged 2 2/3 innings during his first start of the year, giving up three earned runs on four hits while striking out three. It was not the worst performance, but it was not what Kansas City was hoping for out of his first start in the rotation this year.
