The New York Yankees traded left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations, the teams announced on Tuesday.

Ramirez is 7-7 with a 4.04 ERA, 127 strikeouts and 1.341 WHIP across 151.1 innings pitched during his four-year Major League career. Despite the Yankees’ overall struggles last season, Ramirez was a bright spot out of an effective bullpen – which led MLB in ERA – recording 24 strikeouts while allowing just nine walks with a 2.66 ERA in 40.2 innings.

The 34-year old who will turn 35 in August was designated for assignment this past weekend. Ramirez was ultimately squeezed out of a notably deep bullpen, which despite losing Michael King to the San Diego Padres in a trade for Juan Soto this past offseason, has performed well in the Yankees’ 5-1 start to the 2024 regular season.

In New York’s first six games the bullpen has collectively allowed just four earned runs, with the brunt of the work coming from closer Clay Holmes, Ian Hamilton, Jonathan Loaisiga, Nick Burdi and left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson. By shedding Ramirez, New York creates room for LHP Tanner Tully, who was also designated for assignment on Monday.

To complete the transaction, the Dodgers transferred Brusdar Graterol on the 60-day IL, joining pitchers Clayton Kersaw and Dustin May, creating a spot for Ramirez on the active 40-man roster. Graterol appeared in only one game during spring training nursing hip and shoulder injuries, and was originally placed on the 15-day IL on March 19.

Despite a 6-2 first-place start for Los Angeles, the organization needed another left-handed option in the bullpen for depth. Ramirez is expected to join and be utilized in a Dodgers bullpen that also features LHP Ryan Yarbrough and Alex Vesia.
