Cavs’ Owner On Donovan Mitchell's Contract: ‘We Think He Will Extend’

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Cleveland Owner Dan Gilbert expressed the team's belief that Mitchell will remain with the team long-term.

Ever since the Cleveland Cavaliers fell in the first round of the NBA Playoffs last year, a hot topic of discussion has been whether or not Donovan Mitchell will remain with the team long-term.

Before he was traded to the Cavaliers in 2022, Mitchell signed a five-year contract extension in 2020 as a member of the Utah Jazz.

According to Spotrac, the five-time reigning NBA All-Star is under contract with the Wine and Gold for next season, and has a player option ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

In a recent article, Larry Lage of the Associated Press writes about Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert’s thoughts on Mitchell’s contract. Gilbert ultimately believes that Mitchell will make a long-term commitment to the team.

“We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract,” Gilbert said. “We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city.”

He also described Mitchell’s fondness of the team that Cleveland has assembled recently.

“He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly the biggest part of,” Gilbert said.

These thoughts come shortly after it was reported that many around the NBA believe Mitchell will eventually re-sign with the Wine and Gold. Former Jazz teammate and current Cavaliers teammate Georges Niang also recently expressed his opinion that Mitchell will end up “being a Cavalier for a long time.”

However, Cleveland still has nine regular-season games and the 2024 NBA Playoffs on the way before the team or star guard even consider next steps toward any potential extension talks.
