Can Bam Adebayo return to the All-Star game?

Bam Adebayo has made the All-Star team three times over his career, and for Miami Heat fans that number probably feels like it is lower than it should be. There are a multitude of reasons for this, but none the less he has only made it 3 times.

With the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat will change drastically, and this could help Adebayo make the team again. A couple things stand in the way though.

Consistency throughout the season.

Heat fans have probably noticed that Adebayo tends to have stretches of pure dominance but then also stretches where his statistical numbers seem lacking. Considering the All-Star game is at the halfway point of the year, there really is no room for up and down play.

To remake the team Adebayo needs to come out the gate playing his best basketball. He can not afford to have a month where his play is greatly below his standard. He has to consistently play great from the first game.

Team standings.

I do not care if you like it or not, but the standings play a factor in who receives awards and accolades. That is true for the end of the season awards and for the All-Star game. The Heat will almost certainly have Antetokounmpo representing them in the game, which means the Heat need to be winning games at a good clip to get a 2nd player in.

Even if Adebayo is playing at an All-Star level, if the Heat are in the 7th seed it will not matter. Adebayo needs the Heat to be in the top 4-5 seeds to be given a chance. Now if something happens and Antetokounmpo misses time that could change the equation, but assuming everyone is healthy Adebayo needs the team to be doing well.

A crowded field.

The East might get a lot of flack from fans about being the weaker conference, but they do not lack star power. The Philadelphia 76ers alone have 4 players whom anyone would assume on making the All-Star team if healthy.

In this day and age there are countless players that can produce big numbers that catch your eye on a box score. Adebayo needs to be one of these guys. Though a lot of what he provides does not show up on the box score, it is still important to catch voters attention.

With the amount of star power in the East getting larger, with the additions of LeBron James and seeming Kawhi Leonard, the numbers will be important when people stack resumes. It will be hard for Adebayo to win an argument if his numbers are not at least close.

Ultimately Adebayo needs to be a consistent Robin to Antetokounmpo’s Batman. He needs to play like a bonified star for the start of the season. He also might need some help from other stars, maybe missing games or having down years to make the team.

He should have a clearer path for making his fourth All-Star team because 1.) he’s shifting into a more suitable role and 2.) he’s on a team contending for a top-4 seed in the East.
