Coach Green Pleased With Pelicans' Offensive Production

In this story:
New Orleans, La- New Orleans is currently on a three-game winning streak and looking to erase the effects of a ten-game losing streak. One common denominator for the Pelicans' recent success is the lack of turnovers they've committed.
During their ten-game losing streak, New Orleans was fourth-worse in the NBA with 15.6 turnovers a contest. In the three games since the Pelicans have committed the third-fewest turnovers in the league (10.7).
I asked coach Green after Tuesday night's 116-107 victory over the Atlanta Hawks about the importance of valuing the basketball.
"Loving it!" Green explained. The focus on protecting the basketball allows the offense to breathe and doesn't put unnecessary pressure on his defense.
"It's allowing our offense to breathe. It's allowing our offense to be successful. When we turn the ball over a ton, we put a ton of pressure on our offense but also our defense. Tonight was another good night of taking care of the basketball, making smart plays. Ten turnovers, 28 assists. We'll take it every night."

That theme has resonated much of the season. Since the start of the new year, New Orleans has averaged three fewer turnovers in their wins compared to their losses. That may seem like a small differential, but when you consider the 20-point disparity between their point-per-game average during that same span, you can see the importance of holding on to the basketball.
The Pelicans currently sit at 8th in the Western Conference standings, but only 1 1/2 games separate the fourth spot from the eighth. If New Orleans wants to climb back up the rankings, it must continue to value the basketball and maximize its offensive potential.
