Why the Jalen Duren Saga Has Soured His Perception Among Fans

In this story:
Jalen Duren signed a 5-year, $200 million deal prior to the Oct 1st deadline to sign his $9.6 million qualifying offer.
By signing this extension, Duren will earn about $40 million annually through the 2031 season.
Tumultuous offseason
Even though this extension commits Jalen Duren to Detroit for the foreseeable future, Pistons fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ugliness of the whole ordeal. After all, Duren was recently reported to want a change of scenery rather than return to Detroit.
Duren also met with teams like the Sacramento Kings to try and facilitate a sign-and-trade out of Detroit; this has not been quickly forgotten by fans either.
In addition, the offseason opened with bitter feelings towards Duren for underperforming against both the Cavaliers and the Magic in this past season’s playoffs, both series requiring seven games.
Recent endeavors
More recently, head coach JB Bickerstaff made cryptic comments regarding Jalen Duren making his debut, furthering fan speculation that Duren is not committed to the Pistons.
At a press conference following the signing, Duren expressed his interest to remain a Piston for the entirety of his career; a remark that many fans scoffed at. Perhaps had Duren waited until the dust settled from his ugly negotiations this offseason to declare his commitment to Detroit, then it might have been better received by fans.
Instead, comparisons to Kyrie Irving preaching to Celtic fans quickly swirled around social media with Duren playing the role of Kyrie.
Future implications
While Jalen Duren could have very well meant what he said when he declared he wants to be a Piston for life, it is not uncommon for players to quickly double back on those spoken promises. Especially, when such a player had been leaking to reporters that he was looking for a change of scenery under a month prior.
Regardless, the Pistons have now finally inked each member of their young core to long-term extensions, with Duren signing after defensive standout Ausar Thompson, who signed a 5-year $155 million deal earlier in September.
Now that the Pistons have finally fully committed to their youth, while letting expensive veterans like Tobias Harris walk, they have finally surrounded Cade Cunningham and friends with a much more competent cast of role players.
While fans might be dissatisfied with Duren following such a long and grueling offseason, NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick once said,
