This Could Be An Opportunity to Transform The DC Sports Path

Monumental Sports & Entertainment Owner Ted Leonsis has a unique opportunity to lead the transformation of DC Sports, but can he?

DC Sports is at a critical moment in its history.

The Washington Commanders will be sold soon after 20+ years under Daniel Snyder’s leadership.

The Washington Nationals are still rumored to be on the "sports teams to be sold" list. Of note, it was publicly reported that Monumental Sports & Entertainment Owner Ted Leonsis put in a bid for the team.

Two of Leonsis’ teams are in search of new leadership.

The Washington Capitals need a new Head Coach.

The Washington Wizards need a new President/General Manager.

One current constant in this whirlwind of change is Ted Leonsis. Leonsis himself must make some big decisions this NHL and NBA off-season after both the Capitals and Wizards did not make the playoffs. While he’s experienced championship victory in recent years with the Capitals and the Mystics. One can’t help but to ask well what about the Wizards, given it has been over 40 years that the franchise has seen the championship floor or even a deep playoff run.

What the Wizards have seen, however, is a revolving door of players. During the NBA playoffs, Wizards fans and I am sure Leonsis as well are constantly reminded of this when former Wizards land on playoff teams and even win a championship here and there.

Yet, here lies an opportunity for Leonsis to get it right and set the trajectory for years to come for all of DC Sports. One would think a chat or two about bringing championships to the District consistently would be a topic of conversation with the new owners of the Commanders and Nationals. One would also think that no one wants their home base to look like an away game each time their team plays, so certainly they would all agree that winning cures all. From an overall city location perspective, winning would further build business, generate revenue, and make people genuinely happy.

What sports team owner wouldn’t want a city full of happy people wearing the home teams jerseys while thriving financially?

Ted Leonsis has some very important decisions to make and relationships to build with the new owners of other DC sports teams. Let’s see if he does that resulting in championships and a winning atmosphere for the Washington Metropolitan area.
