49ers GM John Lynch Did Not See an Aaron Donald Comeback Coming

Worrying.

The news that Aaron Donald has come out of retirement for the 2026 NFL season should be worrying for the league and the San Francisco 49ers.

But what’s most worrying is San Francisco’s general manager and vice president of football operations, John Lynch, who shared some concerning comments about Donald's return during Monday’s press conference.

“Yeah, I mean, the guy’s different, right? He’s an exceptional player, one of the greats. I do subscribe to that," Lynch told reporters when pressed about Donald's return.

"I think we’re pretty good too. They got better certainly with him deciding to come out of retirement. Now, there’s time away, but I know that guy trains like a bad man. I ran into him in a hotel somewhere a while back and we had some fun chatter back and forth.

"Never thought he’d do it, but he’s doing it. And so, we better get ready for it.”

To me, it now feels like Lynch either genuinely didn’t expect Donald to return or is playing down how prepared the 49ers were for it.

If it’s the latter, it would be an intriguing move ahead of Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. No one knows whether Donald will play immediately, but he has been practicing at the team’s training facility as he prepares for his return. If the 49ers did know this was coming, pretending they were caught off guard would be an interesting strategy heading into the season.

But if Lynch genuinely didn’t think a return was possible, that should be a worrying statement to 49ers fans. For someone in his position to admit that so openly in front of reporters and the rest of the league raises questions about how prepared the team is for Donald’s return.

The possibility of Donald's unretirement became even more likely after the Rams traded for Myles Garrett, one of the league’s best pass rushers and another player widely regarded as one of the best of his generation.

If Lynch is telling the truth and the 49ers genuinely had no expectation that Donald would return, the team may now be scrambling to make final preparations before their flight to Melbourne this week.

It’s clear the Rams arguably have the best roster on paper this season, while the 49ers are lacking in certain areas. However, Donald’s 5-13 record against the 49ers could offer San Francisco a small source of comfort.
