NFL Insider Says Joe Burrow Should Sign Unprecedented Contract Tied to Salary Cap

Burrow is in the process of negotiating a contract extension with Cincinnati.

CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow is hoping to sign a long-term contract extension with the Bengals this offseason.

The 26-year-old quarterback has two years left on his deal. His extension is expected to make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Mike Florio believes Burrow and the Bengals should agree to a contract that changes based on the salary cap.

"One of these guys (quarterbacks) is going to get a deal that pays him a percentage of the salary cap. And that's fair. That's the way to do it," Florio said on the Pat McAfee Show. "You talk about leaving enough money aside for the rest of the team. OK, let's not talk dollars. Let's talk 16 percent. I get 16 cents of every dollar, whatever the cap is.

"If anybody's gonna do it, it's gonna be Joe Burrow and if any owner is gonna do it, it's gonna be Mike Brown, who's been that contrarian that will do the thing that the league doesn't want him to do and the league doesn't want teams to do this."

A contract based on the salary cap is unprecedented, but it may make sense for Burrow and other star quarterbacks moving forward.
