Browns DE Myles Garrett too low in These Defensive Linemen Rankings?
Perhaps it is because his team has not had a ton of success since he’s been in the NFL, but Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett may be getting slept on a bit. SI ranked the top 10 defensive linemen in the NFL and had Garrett in the fourth spot, which would be fine if those in front of him were simply better.
Ahead of Garrett was Dallas Cowboys’ Micah Parsons at No. 3, Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald at No. 2, then San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa at No. 1.
Parsons is a game wrecker in his own right and had 13 sacks in back-to-back seasons to begin his career. He also forced 6 fumbles through two years but that’s not better than what Garrett has done.
For two years in a row, Garrett has put out 16 sacks. Last season he did it with close to no help around him. The Browns’ next-best pass rusher was defensive tackle Taven Bryan with just three sacks. No one in the NFL faced more double teams while still maintaining the amount of success that Garrett has had over the past couple of years.
2023 could be the year that Garrett finally has the supporting cast around him to explode for a season of more than 16 sacks, which would likely result in him winning Defensive Player of the Year.
Donald is surely a top-five defensive lineman but he had just five sacks in 11 games last year, which is down in terms of his production. He’s been a player that has been rumored to be retiring each of the last couple of offseasons despite still being great. The Rams defensive tackle is still elite but some are stuck on what he has done in the past and not recently.
Bosa is coming off of a season of 18.5 sacks, his second in a row with at least 15. They’re great numbers for a great player that has had a mean supporting cast around him, as well as a great defense. Perhaps the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is in the right spot for at least now.
Garrett and the Browns’ defense should be very good in 2023 under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Schwartz has a background of deploying some really good defensive lines, in the end, it should be proven that Garrett is a top-three defensive lineman in the NFL.
