In this story:

Now that the season is over, the focus for the Los Angeles Chargers is improving the team ahead of the 2024 season. While that will begin with the Chargers choosing their next head coach and general manager, it will follow with free agency and the NFL draft.

The Chargers have a pick in each of the seven rounds in this year's NFL draft, starting with the No. 5 overall pick. After finishing a disappointing 5-12 during the regular season, the one benefit is the Chargers do receive a top draft choice.

After this high first-round pick, the Chargers have the 37th overall pick in the second round, the 69th overall pick in the third round, the 101st pick in the fourth round, the 133rd pick in the fifth round, the 165th pick in the sixth round and the 197th pick in the seventh round.

Of course, any of these picks could be subject to change if there are any trades leading up to the draft, but overall the Chargers are slated to have a high pick in each round.

The main focus will be on who the Chargers decide to take with that fifth overall pick.

Only the Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals are selecting ahead of the Chargers. With several of these teams expected to take a quarterback, Los Angeles will have a clear shot at the premiere players in this draft.

The Chargers have multiple needs both offensively and defensively, though this draft is expected to have better depth and better selections on offense. If the Chargers want to select a playmaker for Justin Herbert, Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze and LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers will be some of the top options likely available.

Fred Biletnikoff Award winner Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is expected to be selected before the Chargers pick.

For a protector, the Chargers could opt to select either tackle Olu Fashanu from Penn State or tackle Joe Alt from Notre Dame. The Chargers could also look to help their secondary -- especially after the J.C. Jackson signing fell through -- they could look to pick Clemson's Nate Wiggins or Alabama's Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Ultimately, the decision will be based on who the Chargers' new coaching and front office staff chooses to pick after free agency.
