Through all of the Los Angeles Chargers' moves and contract restructures this offseason, they have kept one big thing in mind the entire time: Justin Herbert's upcoming extension. Herbert has made it very clear in his first three seasons in the NFL that he is LA's cornerstone of the future and he deserves to get paid like it.

When addressing the media this morning, Chargers' head coach Brandon Staley confirmed that the franchise is in communication with Herbert as they try to get a deal done.

This news was first reported by the NFL's Lindsey Thiry and Dov Kleiman.

"The #Chargers have engaged QB Justin Herbert about a contract extension and discussions are ongoing. Could Herbert become the first NFL player to sign a contract with a total value of $500 million?"

In a 2022 season riddled by injuries too both himself and his teammates, Herbert was still able to record 4,700 yards with 25 touchdowns en route to leading LA to their first playoff appearance since before he got drafted. He immediately showed the poise and talent to succeed in the league from a young age and many of the moves LA is planning to make revolve around getting him more offensive help.

There are few quarterbacks in the league that also possess the physical qualities of Herbert. Standing at 6'6, he is able to look over defenders to find his passing targets and also has a big frame that allows to fight through off-balance hits. He is truly one of the most versatile and promising QB's in the NFL and that is why he could become the first player to receive a $500 million contract.

Patrick Mahomes is currently sitting on a 10-year extension worth $477 million. However, Herbert is always the name people bring up to one day take the throne from the QB of the Kansas City Chiefs.
