Chiefs Injury Report: Trey Smith Returns to Practice, Andy Reid Provides Update on Patrick Mahomes' Timeline

In this story:
After being sidelined due to a hip injury since August 7, Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith is returning to practice.
In the midst of training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, Smith briefly left the team to meet with a specialist about a hip ailment. Smith never returned to on-field participation in St. Joe and did not appear in either of the team's first two preseason games.
On Monday, however, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Smith would return to the field for the first time in more than two weeks.
"Well, we'll see how he does today, ease him back in, but he wants to get out there and get going," Reid said. "It's been killing him not to be out there, so he's kind of wired that way."
While Smith's absence was evident during his time on the sidelines, Reid said it was worthwhile in order to prepare Smith for the regular season.
"Trey loves to play, but it was important that he let that thing heal up like he did, and I think it'll pay off for him down the road."
When will Patrick Mahomes return to the field?
The Chiefs' most high-profile recovery of the preseason belongs to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. While Kansas City's signal-caller was cleared for participation throughout camp, Mahomes has not appeared in either of the team's first two preseason games, though he has suited up and gone through pregame warmups in both instances.
Asked if there was any update regarding Mahomes' status for Week 1 of the regular season, Reid made it clear that he wouldn't be guaranteeing anything today.
"Listen, he's doing great," Reid said. "We'll just see. I'm literally taking it day-by-day; no predictions here on anything. If the doctors and trainers and everybody that [is] involved in this give him an OK, then, most of all, if he feels like he can, then we'll address that when we get there."
Noting that Mahomes has spoken about generally wanting to be on the field, Reid was asked if Mahomes was being held back as a coaching decision or if he is still waiting for another degree of medical clearance.
"Yeah, you know, probably not cleared enough," Reid said with a smirk.
Other players not practicing on Monday
The Chiefs are still without a long list of players on Monday, including safety Alohi Gilman, who was ruled out with back spasms during pregame warmups on Saturday, and defensive end Tyreke Smith, who suffered a hamstring strain in Tampa Bay.
Left tackle Josh Simmons, safety Chamarri Conner, defensive end Ashton Gillotte, linebacker Jack Cochrane, quarterback Chris Oladokun, guard CJ Hanson, and wide receivers Jeff Caldwell and Jimmy Holliday were all sidelined for Monday's practice. Reid noted that Oladokun is in the concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms following Saturday's game.
Later Monday afternoon, the Chiefs announced that they waived Caldwell with an injury designation and signed free agent defensive end Niles King. King played for San Diego State in 2025 and signed with the Los Angeles Chargers before being waived by LA in May.
