4 Things We Learned About Dallas Cowboys From NFL Owners Meetings

In this story:
The NFL Annual League Meeting took place this week notable Dallas Cowboys were in attendance, per usual.
Among those notable Cowboys were owner Jerry Jones and head coach Brian Schottenheimer, both of whom spoke to reporters during the event.
And, with their media availability, Schottenheimer and Jones provided some interesting nuggets. Here's what we learned.
George Pickens extension in serious doubt

While the Cowboys have repeatedly said they want wideout George Pickens around for the long haul, their actions say otherwise.
Jones stated Dallas hasn't had any talks with the veteran receiver recently, and The Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins went as far as to say there haven't been any substantial talks between the two sides.

Jerry also sounds like he's perfectly fine with Pickens playing on the tag in 2026, but the problem is that could lead to a holdout.
And, in what is a repeat of the Micah Parsons debacle, Jones even took a shot at Pickens' agent, David Mulugheta.
"If he worked without an agent, he’d save a lot of money," Jones said. "With me.”
The DaRon Bland plan

While many believed the Cowboys could utilize DaRon Bland more in the slot in 2026, Schottenheimer said the goal is for Bland to play on the outside this coming season.
"At the end of the day, we'd love to have a guy that allows us to keep DaRon on the outside," Schottenheimer said to reporters. “We feel like he can shut down a side of the field.”
That creates an interesting dynamic if the Cowboys draft a boundary cornerback in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft because Shavon Revel is also on the roster and Dallas has in-house options play in the slot.
Cowboys aren't done making moves

Cowboys fans will be happy to know that Jones doesn't think the team's roster is a finished product.
Jones believes the Cowboys have been aggressive this offseason, which is debatable, but he admits there is more work to be done.
"We've been aggressive. We have, relatively speaking, stepped up the financial requirements for what we have done," Jones said at NFL Owners Meetings. "We may have exceeded, busted, whatever you want to call it, but we're not done. We got some more to do."
Interest in Bobby Wagner?

It's logical to assume the Cowboys may target future Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner given their need at the position.
And that idea was given a boost this week when Schottenheimer revealed how big of a fan he is of the 35-year-old.
"Well, I will say this. Number one, we've-- We've made some really strong runs at inside linebackers. It hasn't worked out. You're looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world," Schottenheimer told Kay Adams.
"Being in Seattle with him for three years and watching him compete and just talk trash in a good way, I love that guy. And he's still playing at a high level. So we'll see how everything works out. It's an exciting time of year, but Bobby Wagner, total stud," he added.

While Wagner is long in the tooth, he is still playing at a very high level. He was one of the best run-defending and pass-rushing linebackers in the NFL last season and was still respectable in coverage.
Wagner would be a perfect one-year stopgap and would not preclude the Cowboys from drafting a linebacker early.
