Seattle Seahawks CB Trevon Diggs Gets New Jersey Number

In this story:

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Trevon Diggs is getting ready to start practicing with the team as they head to Nashville for joint practices with the Tennessee Titans.

Diggs wore the No. 7 jersey for five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, but that number is currently occupied by outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu. Diggs wore No. 28 when he joined the Green Bay Packers off waivers at the end of the year, but that number is also taken by fellow cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett. This means Diggs would have to pick a new number. He settled on number 16.

The most recent player to wear No. 16 is wide receiver Tyler Lockett, who was with the team for 10 years, from 2015-24. He is second all-time in franchise history in receptions behind Steve Largent, so Diggs has some pretty big shoes to fill.

"It's been a long journey, and I'm just extremely thankful," Diggs said via the team's website. "It's been a blessing from God, I thank him the most. I'm just thankful for the opportunity."

Diggs is excited about playing with some of his former coaches and teammates who were previously at Alabama or Dallas before heading their way up to the Pacific Northwest. Diggs also had the opportunity to sign with the Detroit Lions, but he ultimately decided to go with Seattle, where he could play for one of the league's best defenses.

"Amazing," Diggs said of the team's defense via the team's website. "It looks amazing. They get to the quarterback, they create turnovers, they do all the right things, so I'm excited to hopefully be a part of it. Just go out there and compete and just try to help this team win, that's all I want to do."

Diggs was waived by the Packers back in January and had yet to sign with a team during free agency. The two-time Pro Bowl cornerback has struggled with injuries in recent years, and some would say he is still looking to get back to his peak. Since recording 11 interceptions in the 2021 season, Diggs has only had six picks, and none since Week 10 of the 2024 season.

The hope with Diggs is that he will use this fresh start with the Seahawks as a chance to get his career back on track and help Seattle win another Super Bowl.

Diggs is not expected to play in the Seahawks' preseason contest on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT inside Nissan Stadium. Fans can watch the game on FOX.
