NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans got the 2023 NFL draft started with the pick of offensive lineman Peter Skoronski out of Northwestern. That means it is time to give out grades for the pick even if they may be considered way too early. Time to have some draft-weekend fun and get the grades rolling.

Tyler Rowland — A

This may not have been the home-run move that trading up for a quarterback would have been, but it is a standup double and that is the perfect way to start Ran Carthon's tenure as general manager. Skoronski provides positional versatility and a reliable skillset. He should be a starter from day one and it was important the Titans hit on this pick after missing in the first round the last two drafts.

Greg Arias — A

It might not be what the most vocal fans had hoped for, but Ran Carthon's job is not to make them happy. His job is to build the best possible team he can, and for those that might not remember, this team gave up 49 sacks last season. Peter Skoronski should immediately improve the offensive line and could be a starter for the next decade.

The Titans are back on the clock tonight for day two of the 2023 NFL draft. They are currently set to have two selection. The first at pick 41 and the second at pick 72. The Titans still have plenty of roster needs to address and few picks to do it with. Every move they make this weekend will be crucial to the future of the team.

Tom Brew — A-minus

After Tyler and Greg's grades, it might seem like I'm being a little negative with my A-minus grade, but that's certainly not the case at all. Having covered the Big Ten the past four years, I've seen a lot of Northwestern left tackle Peter Skoronski, and I think he's a heck of a player. I applaud the pick, without hesitation.

Here's the only thing that adds the minus to the grade. When we did our league-wide Sports Illustrated/FanNation mock draft and I got to be the Titans' GM for the day, I went wide receiver instead of offensive line. I took Ohio State's Jaxon Smith-Njigba because I think he's going to be an All-Pro someday, and that's a massive need for the Titans as well. Even as things played out Thursday night, I still would have made the receiver pick.

That's always the dilemma when you have multiple needs like the Titans do. Do you go O-Line first and then receiver on the second day, or vice versa? Neither is wrong, I just preferred the other approach. Would they have been better off with Smith-Njigba and, say, guard Steve Avila of TCU or Matthew Bergeron of Syracuse in the second round? Heck, I would have loved to grab Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer or Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. — who both surprisingly fell out of the first round — with that No. 41 pick, too. See what I mean? That's enticing, too. But welcome to Nashville, Peter, we're glad to have you.
