Manchester City get their 2026–27 Premier League campaign underway against a Bournemouth team preparing for its first taste of European soccer.

Two new managers face off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, as Enzo Maresca encounters Marco Rose for the very first time.

Both have big shoes to fill, with Maresca having the small task of succeeding a genius in Pep Guardiola, while Rose was confirmed as Andoni Iraola‘s successor as early as April. A smooth transition process has been undergone on the south coast, with Rose inheriting a group of players that finished sixth in the Premier League last season, thus earning a Europa League spot.

Man City are ultimately aiming to quickly knock Arsenal off their perch at the Premier League’s summit, but there was a distinct gulf between the two teams in last week’s Community Shield. The Gunners strolled to a 3–0 victory, and Maresca insisted that the outing was a valuable learning experience for his group of players.

The Cityzens currently don’t look like serious challengers, with work needed in the final weeks of the window, especially in midfield.

It was a concerning defeat for City in Cardiff, but rarely has the Community Shield accurately indicated the fortunes of the competing teams for the season ahead. Maresca can take solace in that, and we know that this City team could look very different in a couple of weeks.

Thus, there’s an opportunity for Bournemouth to secure a statement victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. However, injuries haven’t been the Cherries’ friend this summer, and they head into this fixture with several notable absences.

The jury’s out on whether Rose is the right man to succeed Iraola, even if the Spaniard is an admirer of the soccer Rose preaches. His record post-Borussia Mönchengladbach is spotty, and none of the five Premier League managers who made their managerial bow at the Etihad have prevailed.

  • Head-to-head record: Bournemouth have historically wilted at the Etihad. Man City have won all nine of their home Premier League games against the Cherries, doing so by a 34–6 aggregate score.
  • Opening day success: The Cityzens have won 14 of their previous 15 opening Premier League games. Their sole defeat came against Tottenham Hotspur in 2021. On the contrary, Bournemouth have won just two of their previous nine opening-day fixtures.
  • Etihad fortress: Even when City endured slumps during Guardiola‘s final two seasons in charge, they still found it tough to lose at home. They lost just twice in the Premier League at the Etihad last season, including against Aston Villa on the final day.

Prediction: Man City 2–1 Bournemouth

Man City Predicted Lineup vs. Bournemouth

Jérémy Doku is set to miss the start of the season with a calf injury sustained in last week’s Community Shield. With Savinho heading to Tottenham Hotspur and Omar Marmoush potentially following suit, City are relatively short of senior attacking options on Gameweek 1.

Jack Grealish is still in the picture, but Maresca will likely turn to Rayan Cherki to supply more guile and craft alongside Phil Foden.

The shoddy performances of full backs Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico O’Reilly last week may see the Italian make a double change, with Matheus Nunes fit again and Joško Gvardiol an option to replace O’Reilly.

Erling Haaland is fit to start up top, and record signing Elliot Anderson is likely to partner Mateo Kovačić in midfield. The Croat won’t be so high up the depth chart for very long, though, given that City are chasing two midfield signings before the summer transfer deadline.

Man City predicted lineup vs. Bournemouth (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Guéhi, Gvardiol; Anderson, Kovačić; Cherki, Foden, Semenyo; Haaland.

Bournemouth’s injury list is considerably more extensive than the hosts’, and they’re also without Ryan Christie through suspension this weekend.

Eli Junior Kroupi was subject to plenty of transfer speculation this summer, but potential suitors were deterred after he underwent foot surgery, meaning he’ll miss the first few months of the season.

Tyler Adams, Veljko Milosavljević and David Brooks are all nursing knocks, while Amine Adli is sidelined with a calf injury.

Veteran Adam Smith is in line to start at right back for the visitors, and there should be a Premier League debut for summer arrival António Silva at the heart of their defense.

Bournemouth predicted lineup vs. Man City (4-2-3-1): Petrović; Smith, Hill, Silva, Truffert; Cook, Scott; Rayan, Kluivert, Tavernier; Evanilson.
