Overview of each platform

Play Alberta

As Alberta's first legal sports betting platform, Play Alberta has had a monopoly in the province since its launch in 2020. It is a government-run sportsbook that is owned and managed by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC). The platform is regulated in Alberta and was built as a compliant and controlled service for sports betting and casino gaming.

Play Alberta’s goal is not to compete in an open market, and this is clear in the product. It focuses on stability and simplicity but lacks the ambition and scope of private sportsbooks. I've personally noticed fewer markets and fewer features, as there's less pressure on the platform to evolve and keep up with the times.

DraftKings

DraftKings is one of the largest sportsbook operators in North America, publicly traded on the NASDAQ, and already established and legal across multiple US states and Ontario before entering Alberta. It provides scale evident in the product, including massive depth in betting markets, numerous ongoing sportsbook promos, and a polished user experience. I've been using DK for 5+ years, and it hasn't disappointed me once over that stretch.

DraftKings is fully regulated in Ontario's sports betting market and has now officially launched in Alberta.

Title Icon SI Betting Expert Analysis

Play Alberta vs. DraftKings comes down to scale. I have used both platforms, and Play Alberta feels more limited, even if it is a stable product. DraftKings offers a deeper, more flexible range of features and promotions, along with better odds. While Play Alberta works as a good starting point for new bettors, DraftKings works better if you value more control and variety.

Odds and value comparison

The difference here is simple and comes down to scale. Play Alberta is a monopoly owned by the AGLC, so it isn’t under pressure to compete on price. It’s different for DraftKings, which operates in a highly competitive market against other betting brands. It shows up less when looking at exact numbers, but more in how both platforms behave across markets.

⛰️ Play Alberta 🟢 DraftKings
Odds margin Typically priced above standard -110 markets on major lines Standard -110 pricing is common on major markets (4.5% hold), but higher on props
Market depth Core markets (moneyline, spread, totals) but limited props and alternates Extensive markets on major events with deep player props and alternate lines
Price movement Slower to react and less connection with broader market shifts Moves quickly with betting action and global market pricing
Parlay pricing Fixed structure with no advanced same-game flexibility Dynamic Same-Game Parlays with built-in link prices
Live betting pricing Fewer in-play markets with generally conservative pricing Broad live menu, faster updates, and more competitive in-play odds
Overall value Consistent and simple, but not price-driven Stronger overall value, particularly for frequent or price-sensitive bettors

Pros and cons

🏔️ Play Alberta  🟢 DraftKings
✅ Pros Basic betting experience with simple user interface and access to major markets. Stronger odds pricing, promotions, and coverage across the board.
✖ Cons Less competitive odds and key betting features.  Customer support channels lack depth and response quality, considering the size of the platform.

Sports betting experience

Think of Play Alberta as a simple dish and DraftKings as the full menu. The difference is clearest in terms of market depth. DraftKings is a complete sportsbook with extensive player props for top leagues, broad futures options, expansive alternate lines, and some of the best same-game parlays in the industry.

Play Alberta’s approach is more about delivering core betting to users, with markets offering limited options for props and futures. You won’t find many combinable options, so bet structures are quite rigid and don’t provide much customization. Play Alberta is still a part of my rotation for line shopping, but there are always multiple alternative sportsbooks with better odds.

Live betting is another clear split. DraftKings is one of the best brands for fast-moving in-play options, with regular line updates and a massive selection of live markets across multiple sports. Play Alberta allows you to bet as games unfold, but the options are limited, and there are fewer markets.

App and user experience

🏔️ Play Alberta

The Play Alberta app falls on the functional side of mobile sports betting, with a slightly dated design. But the app handles the essentials well and has a clean user interface. Placing bets is simple, but the overall vibe is utility-focused. You won’t have many personalization options because the user experience targets simplicity over immersion. It all feels quite static, but it does provide functionality.

🟢 DraftKings

DraftKings offers one of the best sports betting apps in Canada, with a more modern-looking platform overall that really leans into engagement. The app is built for speed and flow, making it easy to touch and swipe around the interface. I can quickly jump to sports, markets, live bets, promos, casino, and more. DK is more feature-rich, and the experience is more responsive and dynamic.

Payments and banking

Play Alberta has made big improvements in its payment systems in recent years. It now supports Visa and Mastercard debits, Interac, and PayPal for deposits. While this is not an exhaustive collection, it does include the most popular options for bettors in Alberta.

Withdrawal processing takes up to 48 hours, and transactions to Interac or bank transfers take several business days. PayPal withdrawals clear within 30 minutes of approval.

DraftKings offers the same payment methods and also supports American Express, as well as both debit and credit card transactions. You can deposit and start betting from just $5, making this a budget-friendly sportsbook. Cashout speeds are generally fast, and most transactions via PayPal, Interac, and cards are approved and cleared within 24 hours.

Security and licensing

Play Alberta is legal and regulated in Alberta under the AGLC, operating as the province’s sole licensed sportsbook. It follows strict provincial standards for data protection, identity verification, and responsible gambling.

DraftKings is licensed in Alberta, Ontario, and several US states. The platform requires all players to verify themselves through KYC controls and enforces age verification. You’ll also find SSL encryption for data protection and access to full responsible gambling tools.

SI verdict

The introduction of DraftKings and other commercial sportsbooks has changed the Alberta betting landscape. For the first time, the market in the province is competitive, giving customers more promotions, more opportunities to compare odds, and access to high-quality products. Play Alberta will need to adapt or will quickly be left behind.
