What is prop wagering and which sports offer these unique exotic betting options?
We are breaking it down today on Sports Illustrated's Gambling 101.

Prop bets also known as exotic or novelty side bets, may ask “which team will score first,” or “which player will score last,” or “how many touchdowns will player X score?"
Anything that can happen during a sporting event, from the opening coin toss to the post-game Gatorade shower, might be posted as a proposition betting option.

It has been around for decades and the concept is always evolving. Once viewed as “gimmick” bets, prop betting gained worldwide attention during Super Bowl 20 that featured the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. Aiming to attract action from casual bettors, Caesars Palace bookmaker is credited with opening the prop wagering floodgates.

A single YES or NO prop offered during the game has morphed into a mainstream sport betting market.
Prop Options are Offered During Most Sporting Events and they get more creative every year, but just as it started, it still remains most popular during the NFL s
super bowl.

Don't worry though, you don’t have to wait for one Sunday a year to get in on the action. Players are wise to keep props in mind when researching standard betting options.

For instance, if research shows a high scoring NHL team is facing a weak defense, a prop like “anytime scorer” should be considered. Props offered prior to and during the NBA and MLB seasons are also popular. Prop Bets are just another way to make some extra cash.
