Padres Roundup: Casey Mize Update, Nick Pivetta May Not Start, Ty France Explains Breakout

The San Diego Padres completed the sweep of the Minnesota Twins with an 8-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Friars are now 71-60 on the year and two games up for the final wild-card spot in the National League.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had another monster game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. Right-hander Walker Buehler allowed one earned run over six innings of work and struck out four along the way.

Ahead of the eventual victory, right-hander Casey Mize provided the latest on his sprained ankle that forced him to leave Saturday's start early.

“It seemed like my cleat caught one of the steps and then tried to catch myself, and I ended up rolling my ankle ... on the bottom step there,” Mize said on Saturday. “So got it evaluated, taped it up, came back out. My warm-ups weren’t great, you know, so that’s why they came out and checked on me, and I asked to stay in the game and just give us what I could.”

In other pitching news, manager Craig Stammen spoke on right-hander Nick Pivetta and his journey back to the mound for the first time since mid-April. The skipper, however, didn't exactly guarantee a spot for the 33-year-old in the rotation when evaluating his most recent rehab outing.

“Based on his last outing [in Arizona], I think he’s going to get on a five-day schedule and try to ramp up to be a starting pitcher, and we’ll see,” Stammen said. “We’ll watch him every step of the way and determine if he’s ready to step into the rotation or if we want a different role for him.”

Finally, breakout star Ty France revealed the secret behind his continued success in 2026 after pure mediocrity at the plate (hitting .247 with a .686 OPS) in the three seasons that followed a 2022 All-Star nod. He made sure to give the team around him each day in the clubhouse proper credit for his .289 season at the plate with 18 home runs (two shy of tying a career-high mark) and 56 RBIs.

“I’ve got to give Steven [Souza Jr.] and the hitting [coaches] a lot of credit,” France said. “When things are going bad, they don’t let it fester. They just say, ‘Hey, this is what we see. This is what you’re doing. Let’s get back to this,’ or ‘Let’s try this.’ So you have to give them a lot of the credit.”
