How Russell Westbrook's Retirement Impacts the Kings' Free Agency

Over the past couple of weeks, talks about veteran point guard Russell Westbrook potentially returning to the Sacramento Kings have heated up. The Kings need a veteran point guard behind Darius Acuff Jr., and after the impact Westbrook had on Sacramento's rookies last season, who better to add to this new-look roster?

However, instead of re-signing with the Kings, Westbrook has decided to hang it up completely. In a video posted to his social media, Westbrook reminisced on his storied 18-year NBA career, with the caption:

The narrator of the video, Oscar-winning actor Michael B. Jordan, ended the post by saying, "Last question: Now that you decided to step away from everything on your own terms, what are you the most proud of?"

Westbrook, 37, has had an incredible NBA career that most players can only dream of, winning the 2016-17 NBA MVP award, making nine All-Star and All-NBA appearances, being a two-time scoring champ and three-time assist champ, while also making the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Sure, it would've been incredible to see Westbrook play another season in a Kings uniform, but the legendary point guard decided it was time to call it quits, and nobody can blame him.

Westbrook has given his all to the game of basketball, famously being one of the hardest workers the league has ever seen and playing at 100% every night, no matter the circumstances. While his Kings tenure was short, he is arguably the greatest player to ever come through Sacramento, and his veteran presence and leadership will be greatly remembered.

Westbrook's Kings tenure

In one season in Sacramento, Westbrook showed he still had gas left in the tank. In 64 appearances, he started 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He greatly exceeded his expectations as a King, while having a lasting impact on the team's young core.

Kings GM Scott Perry continued to praise Westbrook for his leadership and professionalism. Despite getting a bad rap around the league, he is truly one of the most stand-up players a team could have, and his impact is impossible to replicate.

Westbrook will, of course, be remembered for his tenure with the Oklahoma City Thunder, with his No. 0 jersey likely getting hung up in their rafters, but he continued to make a difference as he found a few different homes toward the end of his career as well.

After cementing himself as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, the legendary Russell Westbrook is retiring. The Kings were certainly lucky to host him in his final season in the league.

What's next for the Kings?

Since Westbrook is officially ruling out a return to Sacramento with this semi-unexpected retirement, the Kings will need to fill their 14th roster spot another way.

Whether it be elevating two-way forward Jonathan Mogbo to a standard contract or diving back into free agency to sign either a different veteran guard or add more forward depth, the Kings should have options to fill out their roster.

Of course, it would've been great to bring back a valuable veteran like Westbrook, but the Kings should still be able to find their answer.
