Lakers Insider Provides Major Update Austin Reaves' Future With LA

While the Luka Doncic contract situation was dealt with this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers still find themselves in a bit of a pickle when it comes to Austin Reaves.

The homegrown guard went undrafted before exploding onto the scene as an undrafted free agent as a rookie in 2021. Reaves has steadily improved year to year — culminating this past season (year four of his career) where he averaged a career-high 20.2 PPG.

Reaves inked a four-year deal worth $53.8 million in 2023. Approaching the third year of his deal, Reaves has a player-option for 2026-27 worth only $14.9 million. Given his age (27) and the expected progression of his game, there's a big decision to make for the Arkansas native.

Anthony Irwin of Clutch Points recently offered a report on the possible status of Reaves moving forward as it pertains to his future with the franchise. Irwin, a longtime coverer of the team, believes that Reaves will likely opt-out of his current deal with an eye towards something more substantial.

"In all likelihood, Reaves will turn down his player option after this season and could command a contract in the ballpark of $30 to $35 million per year. Sources close to the situation say both he and the Lakers would like to continue their relationship for the foreseeable future, but doing so will only make sense if he and Doncic can prove they are a championship-caliber pairing."

The Lakers have a clear affinity for Reaves, and vice-versa. He's very well-liked by the front office, and there's something to be said for his developing into a legitimate third option with the franchise.

At the same time, there are some that believe Reaves may not be worth the $30+ million he likely will be seeking/paid. He's an average defender at best without much of a track record in postseason play. Reaves was notoriously skewered for a very poor performance this past year versus the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Additionally, with Doncic likely to dominate the ball for large stretches, his presence could make Reaves and his skill-set somewhat redundant. Having Reaves playing off the ball does have its advantages — though that role might not fully utilize his talents in the most optimal way.

While the Lakers won't actively look to deal Reaves, he is the best feasible trade chip on the roster should LA pursue that avenue.
