Report: Kyrie Irving Unhappy With Nets Placing Stipulations on Contract Extension

Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets may be heading towards a divorce

Kyrie Irving has one of the more unique situations in the NBA. With the chance to become a free agent this summer, Irving could theoretically leave the Nets for nothing. Brooklyn knows this, but based upon their analysis of the teams with available cap space, the team still believes they hold leverage due to Irving likely needing a sign and trade to land him with his desired team.

This belief seems to partially be why the Nets have been reluctant to blindly offer Irving the contract extension he desires. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Irving was recently offered an extension with guarantee stipulations, that was not well received.

"The Nets recently offered Irving an extension with guarantee stipulations, according to league sources, an offer which was declined," Charania wrote. "Sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations who have been granted anonymity so that they could speak freely say that the extension offer was not well received and that there have been principle differences that have emerged between the Nets and Irving."

With Irving being frequently in and out of the lineup for various reasons over his time with the Nets, it is likely that the team decided to only offer him a contract that includes game minimums and stipulations of that nature. With Irving countering that offer with a trade request, fans now have to wait and see if Brooklyn will actually deal their star guard.
