Detroit Pistons Should Avoid USC Star in 2024 NBA Draft

With the playoffs out of reach, the NBA Draft is the next big event for the Detroit Pistons this year. Seeing that they have the lowest win total in the league, they’ll have some of the best odds to secure a top selection.

Since the college season has come to an end, multiple prospects have begun declaring for the draft. The latest to do so is another potential top pick, USC guard Isaiah Collier. The 6-foot-5 guard was a Pac-12 All-Freshman after averaging 16.3 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 4.3 APG.

Throughout the course of the season, Collier has been all over draft boards. For some stretches, he was expected to be a top-three pick in this class. That said, he has never fallen farther past the lottery.

Collier already has an NBA-ready body, which allowed him to be such a strong downhill threat in college. He is able to stretch his game beyond the arc, but his shot still needs developing. At USC, Collier shot 33.8% from deep on three attempts per game.

While Collier has the potential of a top pick, his fit on the Pistons is questionable at best. His skill set resembles that of Jaden Ivey, which could create a log jam in the backcourt. Also, adding another weak three-point shooter would only cause more spacing issues for the Pistons.

Detroit already has a pair of non-shooters in their starting lineup with Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren. Even though whoever the Pistons draft won’t be a starter on day one, long-term fit is still something worth considering.

Due to the fit concerns, the Pistons might be better off going in other directions on draft night.
