Three Takeaways as Rockets Torch Nets for First Win of 2026

In this story:
The Houston Rockets welcomed the brand-new year with a bang, demolishing the Brooklyn Nets with a 120-96 victory on Thursday evening.
On the first day of the year, the Rockets have clicked on all cylinders to overwhelm the rebuilding Nets from start to finish. They pulled away by the second half and led by as many as 26 to easily secure the victory.
After a problematic December that saw them suffering from brutal late-game execution, blown leads and overtime collapses, the Rockets are now cruising with a four-game win skid. The only way is up for this group to finally be on track and meet its championship expectations.
Here are the main takeaways of the big-time win:
1. Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant led Rockets to dominant outing
Facing a shorthanded Nets team without top player Michael Porter Jr., the Rockets made the most out of their opportunity to clinch the win in Brooklyn.
It was Amen Thompson who emerged as Houston's top player of the night. The talented wing presented another two-way masterclass, finishing with 23 points in an efficient 10-12 shooting along with two steals and a block.
Meanwhile, Kevin Durant made his comeback in Brooklyn and didn't waste any opportunity in dealing against his former team. The Rockets superstar went off for 22 points and performed a great passing clinic with 11 dimes in 37 minutes of play.
2. Alperen Sengun performance well after two-game absence
There were concerns surrounding Alperen Sengun's health. The Turkish star has been ailing from a left soleus strain in his calf and missed the team's last two games.
But in his return tonight, Sengun dusted off any fears and anxiety across the Rockets fanbase. He moved well and helped the team productively en route to victory, recording 20 points, six boards, six assists and two blocks.
Sengun didn't gain any minute restriction from coach Ime Udoka, and he played impressively to fully shoulder the Rockets' frontcourt presence with Steven Adams (ankle) and Clint Capela (illness) unavailable.
3. Reed Sheppard was stellar off the bench
Reed Sheppard maintained his elite showing as the Rockets' main man off the bench. As the Rockets continue operating its massive starting lineup, it was the second-year guard who leads the team's charge as a reserve.
In 31 minutes of play, Sheppard contributed 14 points in 5-11 shooting. And the most interesting segment of his performance has been his defense, leading the team with three rejections.
