Trey Lance Discusses Status With 49ers As Trade Rumors Swirl

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance attended North Dakota State’s final spring practice Saturday, and questions about a possible trade followed him to Fargo.

But the signal-caller didn’t have much to say when asked directly about a potential trade—perhaps to his home state of Minnesota.

“I got no comment on that,” Lance said, per inforum.com. “I have no information.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that San Francisco was fielding calls from teams that were interested in trading for Lance. The interest in the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft is due to the fact that Brock Purdy emerged as an effective option under center down the stretch last season. Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 draft, is now regarded as the team’s starter heading into training camp.

Lance was the team’s starter at the beginning of the 2022 season, but he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. That opened the door for Jimmy Garoppolo to return as starter, but the veteran also eventually suffered a season-ending injury of his own in Week 13. Purdy then went 5-0 in the regular season and led the team to a NFC championship game berth.

Despite having to watch another young quarterback live out his dream last postseason, Lance is optimistic of 2023.

“Last year, I played the one game in Chicago and then got hurt, so it was kind of over before it even got started. But I am just excited for this year,” Lance said. “This offseason, just focusing on getting better. [I’m] focusing on getting these guys better in the locker room and just being a great teammate, a great leader.”

Lance added that doctors cleared him last month to return to football activities.
