Caleb Williams Sets the Record Straight on 'Iceman' Debate With George Gervin

Following a social media uproar about his nickname, Caleb Williams tells his side of the story.

In this story:

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams didn't ask to be called Iceman. In fact, he didn't even like that nickname the first time it was applied to him. But after leading seven fourth-quarter comebacks in 2025, including the Bears' miraculous Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers, he had no choice to embrace what his teammates and public had decided was the only moniker befitting their franchise quarterback: Iceman.

Unfortunately for Williams, the Iceman moniker also belongs to NBA legend George Gervin, who put together a historic career with the San Antonio Spurs in the 1970's before retiring from the NBA following the 1985-86 season. Thus, when Caleb Williams filed trademark applications for the nickname last month, older fans and sports analysts erupted in rage. Longtime sports commentator Skip Bayless went so far as to accuse "Caleb and Co." of attempting to steal Gervin's nickname right out from under him.

Caleb Williams fired back at Skip Bayless regarding the accusation of "stealing" a nickname, but at the end of the day, many fans believed that Williams was disrespecting a legend. On Friday, however, Williams finally set the record straight.

In an interview with Front Office Sports News, Williams addressed the Iceman controversy directly, admitting that he genuinely did not know about George Gervin's nickname. He simply saw all the merchandise that was being made with his likeness and his nickname and, like any good businessman, wanted to ensure he had a hand in that. "I just wanted to trademark it. I'm trying to do that just to make sure that we can control what [merchandise is] being made and put out about me and using that name. It's all respect to George [Gervin]. I didn't know personally...

Here again some of the older fans may scoff at the idea that Williams was unaware of Gervin's nickname, but it's completely believable. Williams wasn't even born until 15 years after Gervin retired. And with all due respect to Gervin (I myself had his famous Iceman poster on my bedroom wall when I was a kid), he's no Wilt Chamberlin or Magic Johnson. He was a tremendous player and a worthy entrant into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, but it's understandable if Williams, who was obsessed with football from a young age, wasn't familiar with every basketball legend from the 1970's.

The Bottom Line

As Williams said, Iceman is a fitting nickname in two ways: Williams already has a reputation for having ice in his veins in clutch moments, and Chicago is a frigid city during the winter months. This is not a nickname he asked for, but one that was bestowed on him by his teammates and fans. Most importantly, he in no way was trying to disrespect George Gervin. Williams even suggested that he may speak to Gervin about this all, just to ensure there are no hard feelings.

I hope the two of them are able to connect and discuss this shared nickname. Both athletes were and are worthy of the Iceman moniker, and Bears fans hope that Williams will one day be the same kind of legend in football that Gervin is in basketball.
