ESPN's Jeremy Fowler: Bengals 'Backfield Appears Set' Following 2023 NFL Draft

Cincinnati has not made any changes to Joe Mixon's status.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals have seemingly cemented the 2023 backfield with the addition of Chase Brown.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler doesn't see much changing for that group across the rest of the offseason.

"Cincinnati wanted to add backfield juice through free agency and the draft, and fifth-round running back Chase Brown certainly qualifies," Fowler wrote. "At the Senior Bowl, Brown recorded the fastest speed for a running bank (20.56 mph) and the second-most explosive efforts among the position (63). As of now, Cincinnati's backfield appears set with Joe Mixon, Brown, and Trayveon Williams. Mixon's future has been cloudy because of his $9.4 million salary, but Cincinnati's decision to draft a running back on Day 3 and not earlier suggests it's comfortable keeping a lead back. No talks intensified, meanwhile, around offensive tackle Jonah Williams, who requested a trade in March. The expectation as of now is he will remain a Bengal."

The Bengals could save over $10 million by releasing Mixon, but they have not made that move as the calendar moves through May.

Mixon ranked 53rd out of 62 qualified backs in yards after contact last season and 49th out of 61 in breakaway percentage. By 10-plus yard runs, Mixon ranked 19th out of 32 qualified backs last season.

He has not shown to be an explosive rushing weapon recently.

Williams also appears likely to wear stripes in 2023 after Cincinnati didn't move him last weekend or take a tackle in the draft.
