Zac Taylor Dives Into Backup Running Back Role: 'That's a Battle'

CINCINNATI — Bengals head coach Zac Taylor gave some insight into how the Bengals' running back "battle" will play out now that Semaje Perine's third-down-back role is up for grabs.

Trayveon Williams, Chris Evans, Chase Brown, and Joe Mixon (in spurts) will all have a chance to impact that spot.

"That's a battle," Taylor said. "That's a big unknown for us right now. And so we've got some guys that can certainly take those reps, it can be one guy, it could be multiple guys, we're not gonna put it in a box and say this is what it's gonna look like.

"The part about Joe Mixon is, you know, he's a featured first and second back as well, so he can do some of the stuff on third down, but you want to keep him fresh and try to keep some stuff off his plate, obviously there's a role for him there. But there's certainly an opening for some other guys to step up and take that. Last year, I think we had 100 catches about at the running back position. There's a big piece of the pie there that people can step up and be a part of."

Perine played 448 offensive snaps last season (a career high). So there is a hole to fill for one of those names over the next six weeks.
