Chargers News: Front Office Rivals Weigh In On Jim Harbaugh Signing

How do opponents think Harbaugh will fare with Chargers?

Naturally, the Los Angeles Chargers hiring of Jim Harbaugh, the former Michigan coach, has created a lot of buzz across the NFL. But what do his opponents actually think of the hire? How do they view Harbaugh as a challenger?

Of course, a lot has changed over the almost decade since Harbaugh was last an NFL head coach. He coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014.

While Harbaugh established a winning reputation with the 49ers, leading the 49ers to three consecutive NFC Championship Games, it's been a long time since he's been with the NFL. And the league is a much different beast than college football.

One NFL general manager has no doubts when it comes to Harbaugh. "If I were hiring a coach this cycle, he'd be my top target, without question," the GM said.

With candidates like Mike Vrabel, Bill Belichick, Ben Johnson, and Mike Macdonald all in this hiring cycle, that comment is a testament to what Harbaugh brings as a coach.

Another AFC executive thinks that Harbaugh will need some time to succeed with the Chargers because of some roster needs.

"He can get them going, but they are old," an AFC exec said. "They need more juice at several positions. So, it will take some time. But he can build it the right way. I'd like to see them more stout in the middle of the defense and against the run."

The executive is not wrong, the Chargers certainly have some team needs and adjustments. While they have their quarterback in Justin Herbert, they do have other holes and places that need shoring up along the offense and defense.

Additionally, two of their best players -- Khalil Mack and Keenan Allen -- are getting up there in age. Both were effective this season, but the Chargers overall need to infuse some younger talent into their team.

Still, the consensus seems to be that opponents believe Harbaugh is a top coach and can turn around the Chargers, even if it's not immediate.
