Jaguars 53-Man Roster Projections 3.0: Saints Trip Brings These Questions to Focus

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars are getting into the dog days of training camp, which means the 53-man roster is starting to come more and more into focus.

Some jobs are closer to being won now than they were a week ago, though this week's practice and preseason game against the New Orleans Saints could also tip the scale for head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone.

"Honestly, we had a personnel meeting the other day, yesterday, and it’s still so early. I think we'll have a better idea after this joint, after this game. That's usually when you try to have a little bit of that in terms of you guys have all seen maybe some of the younger guys in their own way stand out here," Coen said on Tuesday.

"We all kind of know who those people are, but, when you actually have to go play tackle football and play in a game… When we do one-on-ones and stuff, that's not football to me. It's a part of football. It's an aspect of it, but we're not grading that as much. So, I want to go see these guys play football.”

We delivered a 53-man roster last week following the first week of camp practices, and we now turn to an updated version after the team's scrimmage and some heavy-hitting practices like Day 10 on Tuesday.

So, what do we think a current version of the 53-man roster would look like? We break it down below.

QB (2)

Trevor Lawrence; Nick Mullens

Trevor Lawrence has had a solid camp overall, though the offense has had some down days. But then there were days like Tuesday where the lack of a running game made it look like the offense was playing catch-up all day, but you look down and see Lawrence still completing most of his passes. Behind him, it feels like Carter Bradley has had a few nice flashes over the last week for the QB3/Practice Squad spot.

RB (3)

Bhayshul Tuten; Chris Rodriguez Jr.; LeQuint Allen

Chris Rodriguez Jr. looks like he will have no issues when it comes to Week 1, with the veteran running back getting more and more looks in team drills since starting training camp only doing positional drill work. He has impressed, too, and he has made a mark since the pads have come on. A split with Bhayshul Tuten, plus third-down work from LeQuint Allen, seems like the most likely outcome here.

“I love C-Rod. He’s going to get downhill and he’s going to run somebody over. In those short yardage situations sometimes last year, not saying anything about anybody, but that's just the type of back we need," Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange said on Wednesday. "You need a back like that and you need somebody that's going to get downhill and get those dirty yards. It's all about the hidden yards. Can you get plus-two on contact? And C-Rod does that. So, he's a special guy and I can't wait to see what he does this year for us.”

My guess is that you see a lot of work this Saturday from Josh Cameron and C.J. Williams. The duo has impressed throughout training camp, and they should be able to get plenty of game reps with the starters set to sit vs. the Saints. If the Jaguars did carry six receivers, Austin Trammell and Tim Jones have both had good camps. But with Travis Hunter getting receiver snaps all camp, this feels unlikely.

The tight end room is absolutely going to feature both rookie tight ends by the time the official 53-man roster comes out, which means the only real question is whether Quintin Morris makes the 53. The Jaguars could carry four tight ends because they believe they will need more bodies due to the increase of multiple-tight end sets, or they could attempt to stash him on the practice squad after a quiet start to camp.

Cole Van Lanen; Ezra Cleveland; Robert Hainsey; Patrick Mekari; Anton Harrison; Walker Little; Emmanuel Pregnon; Jonah Monheim; Wyatt Milum; Chuma Edoga

How this actually ends up looking come Week 1 depends entirely on Cole Van Lanen and whether he is on the PUP list. But until that actually happens in terms of the Reserve/PUP list, I am factoring him in. The injuries that have ravaged the Jaguars' offensive line could mean Chuma Edoga earns a spot regardless of what Van lanen's status is, too. The Jaguars need several players in this group to get healthy soon.

Josh Hines-Allen; Travon Walker; Danny Striggow; B.J. Green; Wesley Williams; Zach Durfee

The Jaguars have had a number of backup pass-rushers stand out during training camp, but these are the top-four. I hada lot of questions about the Jaguars' pass-rush depth entering camp, but so far this unit has done nothing for the Jaguars but produce. We will need to see if that can carry over to Saints week.

Matt Dickerson was ahead of Ruke Orhorhoro on the first official depth chart, which can either be read into or ignored. What can't just be glossed over though is the fact that he has clearly earned favor with the Jaguars' coaching staff and looks like a secure candidate to make the 53-man roster coming out of camp.

Foyesade Oluokun; Ventrell Miller; Dennis Gardeck; Parker Hughes; Branson Combs; Jalen McLeod

Parker Hughes is clearly going to have to fight for his spot in the preseason, but we are going to slot him here until any games may tell us differently. Jalen McLeod is an interesting player to note because he had a strong start to camp and performance in the scrimmage, but he did not practice on Tuesday. He needs to stay healthy to make the team, and this weekend is a big chance for that to happen.

Travis Hunter; Montaric Brown; Jarrian Jones; Jourdan Lewis; Jabbar Muhammad

Perhaps the Jaguars carry six cornerbacks and keep veteran cornerback Christian Braswell, but right now it feels like this is their top-five. The fact that they have a number of safeties who can play in the slot might impact how they build out the cornerback group as well, but it feels like Jabbar Muhammad has earned a spot no matter what.

Antonio Johnson; Eric Murray; Caleb Ransaw; Rayuan Lane; Jalen Huskey

The Jaguars' safety room looks like it has taken shape, with the top three safeties all due to get plenty of playing time. Rayuan Lane will have a spot on the roster due to his special teams ability, while rookie Jalen Huskey has been impressive over the last week or so of practices. He has clear special teams value, but he has stood out when given a chance on defense as well.

“J-Huskey, he's a dog. He's rangy. He's going to come up, he’s going to hit. I see a lot of myself in him. He is going to be a good player. Yeah, he is going to be a good player," Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson said about Huskey this week.

Specialist (3)

Cam Little; Logan Cooke, Ross Matiscik

This one isn't going to change for a long time. The Jaguars have one of the NFL's best special teams groups and it is headlined by this top-tier trio of specialists. Outside of a missed PAT in the mock game last week, the special teams unit has made virtually every other kick in team settings this summer. Cam Little says he thinks he wants to try from 70, and I think he will.
