Everything I Saw at Day 10 of Jaguars Training Camp: Defense Gives Liam Coen a Hurdle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Well, that was certainly a practice.

The Jacksonville Jaguars held Day 10 of training camp at the Miller Electric Center on Tuesday, and the suddenly banged-up Jaguars did not have the most productive day on offense. In fact, head coach Liam Coen was clearly upset with the unit's performance post-practice, and it is easy to see why.

So, what did we see on Day 10? We break it all down below.

Defense Punches Offense in the Nose

It started in the first team period of the day, and it continued for the rest of the practice. The Jaguars' defense simpy bonked the Jaguars' offense over the head with a club repeatedly on Tuesday, and it got to the point that Coen said after practice that he actually cut the day short as a result. Things were not going to change with another period of work, and he opted to let the defense have the day that they definitively won.

A big part of it had to do with the Jaguars' injuries up front, which have been a problem for a few days now. The Jaguars' front seven took the Jaguars' running game down with mostly ease though, with it being the first day in pads that the Jaguars did not seem to get much traction on the ground. The pass-rush was also relentless, with Travon Walker, B.J. Green, and Dennis Gardeck all record would-be sacks during team drills.

There are going to be days in training camp where one side has the edge, but this day will go down as one of the most lopsided practices of camp thus far. Coen told us exactly that with the way he concluded practice and then evaluated it afterward.

Jaguars' OL is Getting Much Too Thin

The Jaguars still have 30+ days before they kickoff against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, but the offensive line is at a concerning point right now. Injuries have taken a toll on the line, with Patrick Mekari and Cole Van Lanen still not getting team reps, and with Walker Little missing another practice after his injury in last week's scrimmage. Add in some limited work from Ezra Cleveland and Emmanuel Pregnon and it was ... well, Liam Coen used the word "thin" several times. That sums it up.

The Jaguars' starting line for most of the day was (left from right) Anton Harrison-Jonah Monheim-Robert Hainsey-Wyatt Milum-Chuma Edoga. There is no reason to think this is going to be the Week 1 offensive line at this point, but it could create some significant challenges for the Jaguars when they share the practice field with the Saints later this week.

As things stand today, though, the Jaguars need to get healthy quickly. Anton Harrison seems secured at left tackle and we know Robert Hainsey is at center. What will the other three spots look like throughout the rest of training camp?

Parker Washington Still Makes Parker Washington Plays

Even on days where the defense easily has the edge, Parker Washington is still impressing. It has become a daily occurrence during training camp this season as Washington has separated himself as Trevor Lawrence's favorite target in one of the NFL's best wide receiver rooms, and this was again the case during an otherwise lackluster offensive day on Tuesday.

Washington had the play of the day (more on that later) in team drills, but once again ultimately showed that he is a true seperator at each level of the field. It feels like the Jaguars know they can break the glass in case of emergecy and dial up a conpletion to Washington whenever they really feel like they need to. The fact it has become so easy for him even against a much-improved secondary speaks volumes about where he is at.

1-on-1 Standouts

With the offensive line and defensive line tucked on the end of the practice field and with the receivers and defensive backs working on 3-on-3 concepts, we went to take a look at the 1-on-1s between the running backs/tight ends and linebackers/safeties, with the focus being on pass-protection and blitzing. Here are a few of the stand out reps that we saw during that period.

I thought Bhayshul Tuten had several impressive reps in pass-protection. This is an area where he could be needed more this year compared to last, and the early returns are that he has taken a step.

The best reps in pass-pro of course came from LeQuint Allen, but you probably knew that.

Parker Hughes had a great rep on a blitz against Hunter Long, bull-rushing him into where the QB would be.

Nate Boerkircher pitched a shutout by my count. He looks like the real deal as a blocker so far.

Play of the Day

The best play of the day once again came from Parker Washington. Washington does not get many reps against Travis Hunter in coverage, but he was able to be one of the few receivers to beat Hunter on a downfield rep on Tuesday when he hauled in the longest completion of the day down the left sideline. It was as impressive of a win as Washington has had against any cornerback so far in camp, and it another sign of his stellar chemistry with Trevor Lawrence.

Other Notes

There were a few key Jaguars who didn't practice on Tuesday. I didn't see either tight end Brenton Strange or rookie defensive end Zach Durfee. Jourdan Lewis also did not dress and worked out to the side.

I thought Jakobi Meyers made one of his best plays in camp with a diving catch from Trevor Lawrence during the third-downs passing period.

As expected, Liam Coen said the Jaguars would not be playing their starters in the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday.

Jabbar Muhammad continues to stand out time and time again. He has made several stand out pass breakups in recent practices and nearly had an interception of Nick Mullens.

The first snap of team drills was bobbled during the center-quarterback exchange, which kind of says it all.
