Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers Surpasses Brett Favre in NFL History

PITTSBURGH — Aaron Rodgers' impressive start for the Pittsburgh Steelers is propelling the 41-year-old further up the NFL’s all-time record books. In just his third start of the season, Rodgers recorded his sixth touchdown pass of the year. This scoring play placed him fourth on the NFL’s all-time passing touchdown list, surpassing a former mentor in the process.

With his latest passing touchdown, the Steelers quarterback now has 509 passing touchdowns in his historic career, moving him into fourth place on the NFL's all-time list. He also passes a former teammate and mentor with the Green Bay Packers, Brett Favre.

The future Hall of Fame quarterback found star receiver DK Metcalf for career touchdown pass number 508 in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks to move him into a tie with Favre. He then and then found Metcalf once again in Week 3 for the record-setting score.

Now, there are just three players in front of Rodgers with more career touchdown passes, and it’s the holy trinity of NFL quarterbacks. In third place is Peyton Manning with 539. In front of him is Drew Brees, who finished his career with 571. Unsurprisingly, in first place is the greatest of all time, Tom Brady, who threw for an astounding 649 touchdown passes.

Of these three legends, Manning is the only one Rodgers has a strong chance to catch. He’d need to finish the season with 37 touchdown passes to surpass him. The last time he surpassed 30 touchdown throws in a season was in 2021 with the Packers.

The one thing going in his favor so far is that the Steelers’ offense has been dependent on his performance. His ability to read the defense in their Week 1 victory led to four touchdown passes, and it’s that same skill, elite arm strength, and control that put him in front of Favre on the all-time list. To find success the rest of the season, the Steelers will need this level of play from Rodgers for their remaining contests.

This is Rodgers’ first season in Pittsburgh. The 21-year NFL veteran played the last two seasons with the New York Jets, but they released him after the 2024 season concluded. He was linked to the Steelers organization for months before signing a one-year contract to join Pittsburgh. In what could be his final season in the league, he’s making sure to keep things entertaining as he adds another line to his Hall of Fame resume.
