Cristiano Ronaldo’s Explosive Statement Inspires Withering Response

The timeline of events paints a stunning picture of turmoil and tumult over the past few days.

Cristiano Ronaldo used more than 1,700 words to explain why he had stepped away from the Portuguese national team in such spectacular fashion. The manager who inspired his hasty climb-down, Jorge Jesus, needed little more than a handful of words to offer his response.

Caught arriving at his home in Portugal by local broadcaster CMTV on Tuesday night, Jesus was quizzed about Ronaldo’s blockbuster statement. “I was in Leiria watching the U-21 national team match,” the head coach, who was not once mentioned by name in Ronaldo’s tirade, shrugged while leaning out of his car window. “Now I’m going to read Cristiano’s statement.”

The following morning, back in his car, Jesus had consumed the weighty tome. “I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I’m going to the federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team,” he snapped. “I have nothing more to say.”

The 72-year-old is not one to wilt under the scrutiny of any player. Jesus took charge of the first of his 1,175 matches in management when Ronaldo was only 4. The subsequent decades have provided the tactician with thick enough skin to fend off even the most famous figure in his nation’s history. As Ronaldo explained in precise detail, this was not the first time this fall that Jesus had taken a dim view of his comments.
