UPDATE: The Sixers have ruled Joel Embiid OUT vs. the Nets

The Philadelphia 76ers’ 2023-2024 regular NBA season comes to a close on Sunday with a matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. As critical as the game is for the Sixers, they are going in with the possibility of sitting out the star center, Joel Embiid.

Sunday’s game continues a trend that dates back to early last week. When Embiid was gearing up for his return to action after an eight-week absence, the big man was questionable due to knee injury recovery.

Embiid found himself playing against the OKC Thunder, Miami Heat, and Memphis Grizzlies, despite going in as questionable. The trend of playing broke when Embiid sat out against the San Antonio Spurs a week ago. At the time, the Sixers were going into the second matchup of a back-to-back set.

The star center returned to the floor on Tuesday to take on the Detroit Pistons. When the Sixers hosted the Orlando Magic on Thursday, Embiid suited up and played once again.

And even when Embiid went out with an injury scare during the second quarter, he returned to the court for the second half, helping the Sixers put the Magic away with a win.

Heading into Sunday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, Embiid is questionable. Once again, the matchup is a critical one, as the Sixers need to complete their current winning streak with the number at eight in order to boost their chances of avoiding the NBA Play-In Tournament.

While the Sixers should be able to take care of business against a struggling and undermanned Nets team, the availability of Embiid significantly boosts their chances. Plus, Embiid recently admitted that more playing time will help him get closer to where he needs to be for the potential upcoming playoff run.

The 76ers and the Nets will tip-off at 1 PM ET. For now, Embiid is a game-time decision.
