Browns Agree to Deal With Veteran S Rodney McLeod
Cleveland Browns have wasted no time in filling out the No. 3 safety spot on the roster after not selecting one in the recent NFL Draft. According to a report, the Browns are signing Rodney McLeod to a one-year deal. The veteran safety has played in the NFL for 11 seasons.
McLeod spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts where he started 15 games and played in 17 total. Prior to that, McLeod spent six seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles where he started all 75 games that he played in.
After being an undrafted free agent out of Virginia, McLeod landed with the Rams organization in 2012, he spent four seasons there.
Cleveland badly needed safety depth with Ronnie Harrison Jr. becoming a free agent. McLeod can now fill that third safety spot and he brings versatility with him. Besides filling in as a free safety, McLeod is equipped to play in the slot or as a box safety closer to the line of scrimmage.
In each of the last two seasons, McLeod has recorded a pair of interceptions. He sits at 18 of them on his career to go along with 11 forced fumbles.
McLeod joins a safety room that includes Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill, who was signed as a free agent this off-season. D’Anthony Bell and Bubba Bolden are currently on the roster, too.
Browns’ defensive coordinator coached McLeod with the Eagles, so this makes sense on that front. Schwartz gets one of his former guys to deploy.
Cleveland is now over the 90-player mark on the roster so a cut or two is surely coming. The Browns fill perhaps their final glaring need with the signing of a veteran player, you’ll take that.
