Deshaun Watson Thought he was Going to be Drafted by Browns in 2017, After a Text From Hue Jackson
Cleveland Browns made a move to grab Deshaun Watson last offseason but it could have happened a lot sooner, he thought at least.
“Hue Jackson texts me like ‘be ready’,” Watson said happened the morning of the 2017 NFL Draft, via a Twitter Space.
Cleveland had two first-round picks in 2017 and Watson admitted that he would have taken DE Myles Garrett first overall like the Browns did.
Watson was drafted No. 12 by the Houston Texans, and was traded the pick by the Browns. Cleveland went on to move back in the first round to select S Jabrill Peppers. The Browns went on to trade back into the first round and select TE David Njoku.
Jackson texting Watson that morning tells you that Jackson believed that Watson was the guy for the Browns. They had a chance to select him if they wanted him.
At the time, Sashi Brown was the general manager of the Browns, before the job went to John Dorsey.
History sometimes comes full circle and it did with the Browns trading for Watson last offseason, after essentially trading the rights to him in 2017.
