With the Cleveland Browns grabbing their new special teams coach in Bubba Ventrone, there is no better way to look at how his special team units have faired in the past.

Rick Gossellain's special team's rankings are front and center when it comes to talking special teams. Simply put, no one does it better.

In 2022, Cleveland operated with the No. 18 unit in the NFL, in other words in the back half of the league. Ventrone had the Colts as the 8th-best special teams unit in the league. That is just the most recent year, the gap gets larger.

Two seasons ago, Indianapolis had the second-best special teams unit in the entire league, while Cleveland sat at 30th. The Browns had kicking woes, as well as punting issues in 2021. Cleveland went out and got rookie kicker Cade York and punter Corey Bojorquez to try to improve the junior.

Though York's rookie campaign had plenty of downs and a few ups, the Browns will have to give him a chance to be the guy.

Like 2021, there was a large gap between Mike Priefer's special teams in Cleveland and Ventrone's in Indy. In 2020, the Colts went to work with another top-five special teams unit, sitting at four to be exact. Cleveland was a mere 28th in the rankings.

The Browns went out and grabbed a former player turned coach that has the numbers to back up his work. On paper, the Ventrone hire is everything you want. Now, Cleveland just needs it to work out on the field.
