Former Browns Assistant Heading to Chargers to Coach Linebackers
Cleveland Browns will have to replace an assistant coach on the defensive side of the football. Jeff Howard is heading to the Los Angeles Chargers to coach linebackers, first reported by ESPN. Howard joined Kevin Stefanski's staff before the 2020 season and has been in Cleveland since.
While in Cleveland, Howard served as the defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. Howard was a defensive assistant with the Minnesota Vikings for seven years before coming over to Cleveland. Before that, Howard was a quality control coach at Texas Tech for a couple of seasons.
Now, Cleveland will have to add a new defensive backs coach to Jim Schwartz's defense. It's common to replace some defensive assistants when a new coordinator comes in. In the past, Howard has worked with Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome II, and Martin Emerson Jr. to name a few.
The Browns will find themselves a replacement at the assistant coaching position, it's just a matter of how quickly they want to operate.
