Tyquan Thornton’s Injury May Make Tyreek Hill Reunion With Chiefs Inevitable

In this story:
While the Kansas City Chiefs topped the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 yesterday, they lost a budding star in the process. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who was in the midst of a career-high 111-yard, two-touchdown performance, suffered a gruesome injury late in the fourth quarter that will presumably knock him out for the rest of the campaign.
Concerns about the wide receiving corps had already risen after WR1 Rashee Rice exited the contest on the second drive with a hamstring strain. Now, Andy Reid's squad might be short two of its top three wideouts when it returns from the bye in Week 6.
All of these factors combined make a Tyreek Hill reunion in Kansas City impossible to ignore. Unsurprisingly, more reports linking Hill and his former team have surfaced since the final whistle sounded last night.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter revealed this morning that Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is looking to negotiate a contract for the 32-year-old speedster. A deal could reportedly be signed in the "next few days," which is a pretty significant development in the situation.

One of those teams is the Chiefs, who have maintained contact with Hill.

Hill is coming off a horrific injury of his own, as he dislocated his knee and tore multiple ligaments four games into the year with the Miami Dolphins in 2025. He spent the offseason recovering and is nearing full health — whatever that might entail — entering his 11th year in the pros.
"Cheetah" spent six years in Kansas City and reeled in 6,630 yards and 56 touchdowns with the franchise during his tenure. He helped the team win Super Bowl LIV against the 49ers and was Patrick Mahomes' favorite downfield target until he was traded to Miami in the 2022 offseason.
It's no coincidence that all the smoke connecting Hill to the Chiefs has re-emerged with the wide receiver room's status looking grim. ESPN's Nate Taylor wrote in an article yesterday that Hill was targeting a November return — The Athletic's Michael Silver echoed that same sentiment — but Schefter's latest report suggests a signing might be more imminent than initially believed. There's also a world where Hill signs with the Chiefs soon but spends multiple weeks ramping back up to game speed.
I expect the Chiefs to have strong interest in a Tyreek Hill reunion when the free agent receiver is healthy enough to play. He's believed to be targeting a November return. Players I talked to in the locker room (Mahomes, Kelce, Chris Jones & others) are all for it. @TheAthletic

Even if Rice does not miss any time, general manager Brett Veach has to act sooner rather than later to add another target to the passing attack. It's upsetting that it had to come at the expense of a player who was developing into a fan favorite, but the Chiefs no longer have to create an open roster space for Hill if they place Thornton on season-ending IR.

The important caveat to note is that we don't know what Hill will look like in game action. He is aging rapidly and dealing with an injury that many thought could end his career at the time. The Chiefs can't realistically expect him to return to his elite form right away.
Regardless, a Chiefs reunion with Hill was already likely before yesterday's string of injuries. Now, it simply seems inevitable before it becomes official sometime this week.
