3 Things We Learned From Commanders’ Added Day 15 Training Camp Practice

Washington added an unexpected Day 15 practice as Dan Quinn continued evaluating the roster, prepared his starters for Baltimore and searched for answers at several unsettled positions.

The Washington Commanders unexpectedly added a Day 15 practice to the training camp schedule that was originally scheduled as a walk-through. The practice gives them three consecutive days of work before Wednesday's joint practice session with the Ravens. Monday's session ran about an hour and featured limited 11-on-11 work, so the main value came from Dan Quinn talking about the coming week before the practice session. That said, let's take a look at three things we learned from Day 15.

1. Washington Is Using Every Remaining Rep to Make Roster Decisions

Dan Quinn started his press conference Monday by saying the addition of an extra practice session was not a "knee-jerk" reaction to Saturday. He was not pleased with parts of Saturday's game. "I didn't love all that I saw from an identity standpoint, but it wasn't like a knee-jerk reaction to that," Quinn said. The bigger reason is that Washington was having players move around to different positions, making extra reps especially valuable this close to final cuts. Robert Henry Jr. and Kaytron Allen handled most of the running back opportunities with Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White unavailable for full work, and both produced positive runs.

For fringe players, these last few practices are no longer just about development; they're about changing the staff's mind before the roster is reduced to 53.

2. Wednesday Against Baltimore Is Essentially the Starters’ Preseason Finale

Quinn called Wednesday’s joint practice with Baltimore a “big deal” and said the focus will move more toward the starters and players expected to sit out the preseason finale. The practice session fits what Quinn wants by giving Jayden Daniels, who has had limited preseason work, a controlled joint practice environment against a quality Ravens team that can give him competitive reps without Washington needing to expose him deep into Friday’s finale, if at all. "As far as Jayden goes, we haven't gotten there with the game, but having the joint is a big deal for us," said Quinn. "And so, that's where we want to get a lot of reps for him and for many others."

Essentially, Wednesday will be the closest thing the starters may get to a dress rehearsal that actually matters.

3. Injuries Are Still Reshaping Position Battles

More than anything, Washington is still evaluating several positions while key players remain unavailable or limited. Center is the perfect example and a glaring weakness now as well. Quinn said Nick Allegretti is still not ready, while Matt Gulbin will move back exclusively to center this week after getting some work at guard. Hearing Quinn say Washington still has work to do moving forward feels like someone telling me water is wet. "We do, but we still have work to do there... between the three of them, we're still in the process of evaluating what's the best way for us to go." The center position has remained unsettled and unfilled all summer after spending the offseason program hearing about how confident they were that Allegretti would win the competition.

Rachaad White returned to practice, but only in a limited capacity; Croskey-Merritt worked on the side, and that again created extra opportunities for Henry and Allen. Tim Settle returned to practice while Quinn said several were targeting next week, rather than Wednesday's Baltimore practice.

With roster cuts approaching and only a few evaluation opportunities remaining, Baltimore and the preseason finale will do more to settle Washington’s remaining questions than Monday’s light practice ever could.
