Commanders' Stefon Diggs Already Exceeding Dan Quinn's High Expectations

Dan Quinn expected Stefon Diggs to bring elite football intelligence to Washington, but the veteran receiver is already surpassing those expectations.

Just days after arriving, receiver Stefon Diggs is already exceeding the extremely high expectations that the Washington Commanders had for him. That's not to say he has finished learning the system yet; Washington continues to work him into an installation that was already several days in when he was signed.

Diggs Is Showing More Than Quinn Expected

On Tuesday, when Quinn was asked whether he has noticed more explosiveness from Washington's offense since Diggs arrived, his response gives a good feel for where the staff is with him.

"Well, I would say yeah, in some ways I have," said Quinn with a twinkle in his eye. "There's already been some explosive play passes. The interesting thing about Steph, like a smart player, is he good against zone? He knows how to sit down. Like he's good against both, you know, in terms of zone, man-to-man. He knows, you know, how to get himself open."

"His football smarts and instincts are — I thought they were going to be like really high, and they're already past that," said Quinn about Diggs. "So, we're in the early days. He's still learning it, but yeah, he's already making an impact for sure."

Exceeding already high expectations is a good way to get noticed. Doing it while still technically behind everyone else, who had the entire offseason and opening portion of camp to ramp up with the language and timing of the new system, is a good way to show you are still at the top of your craft.

With Daniels and Diggs already working on chemistry in practice, things are on the right track. It is important to remember that Washington does not need Diggs to completely master the offense before his experience, instincts, and route awareness begin creating something the passing game did not have before his arrival.

Diggs' Impact Extends Beyond His Own Role

Quinn also believes the younger receivers can benefit from having both McLaurin and Diggs available.

"But also, there's a good byproduct of things that he's adding," Quinn said. "What can they do? You know, like adding another veteran receiver to your room. Like, they lean on Terry a lot. Now having the ability to, you know, go through things with Steph — that's pretty valuable for Antonio and Luke and, you know, Jay in a lot of ways too."

The effect is already operating in both directions because Washington's receivers are helping Diggs translate the new terminology while Diggs is bringing years of knowledge about concepts he has already run elsewhere.

He's spending extra time with Bobby in the meeting room. And so some of the other guys are just sitting in that same meeting just to help. And so I thought that's also a cool thing to see that Dyami and Jay and others, while Bobby was going through the new calls, they're also echoing, ‘That is like this, this can be like that.'

And so it's nice to see both sides of that, where they're helping him get up to speed, and then there are some concepts that he knows inside out. So he might have called it something differently through the years, but he has insights to share with them. So I like the balance that I'm seeing so far.

It's still early, and Diggs has only just begun the process of developing timing with Daniels and learning the details of Washington's system. The evolving roles of the Commanders' receiver room will start taking a more solid shape in the coming weeks. Washington expected Diggs to bring unusually high football intelligence and veteran instincts; Quinn just didn't expect those traits to stand out this quickly.
