Eagles Sign Two Players For Preseason Finale, Add Depth at RB and DB

The Philadelphia Eagles did fill their 90-man roster in the wake of the release of J.T. Gray and putting Ja'Quinden Jackson on the waived/injured list. Since the Eagles had two roster spots available, the added more depth at running back and defensive back to get through the preseason finale.

Philadelphia announced the signings of running back Jordan Mims and Jaylen Mahoney on Monday, getting to the max of 91 players (Eagles have an international player exception).

These moves are strictly to get the Eagles through Thursday, as they are thin at running back and defensive back.

Who is Jordan Mims?

Mims has been in the NFL since 2023, when he was an undrafted free agent signing by the Buffalo Bills. He never played for the Bills, but ended up with the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

In two seasons with the Saints, Mims played 13 games. He had 20 carries for 70 yards and 12 catches for 71 yards, all in the 2024 season. He wound up with the Tennessee Titans in 2025, playing one game (nine special teams snaps).

Mims was with the Minnesota Vikings in training camp before being waived earlier this month. He also was with the San Francisco 49ers in minicamp.

The Eagles don't have many available running backs to get them through the preseason finale. Assuming Will Shipley does not play on Friday (as he's essentially a roster lock), teh Eagles would have Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele as their running backs.

Pierce was upgraded to limited Monday as he's battled a hamstring injury the past few weeks. Steele is batting for a spot on the team at fullback. Mims would likely get some touches lat some point in the game if Pierce and Steele both play.

Who is Jaylen Mahoney?

Mahoney is listed as a defensive back, but played one NFL game as a safety for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024. He's never played a defensive snap in the league and was signed as an undrfated free agent by the 49ers before ending up with the New York Jets last December.

He spent this spring in the UFL, playing in six games for the Orlando Storm, recording 26 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups. The Eagles were the first team to sign Mahoney since his UFL stint.

Philadelhis is thin in the secondary, yet could use more bodies at safety. With the release of Gray, the Eagles have Andre Sam, Maximus Pulley, and Kapena Gushiken competing for the final safety job. Cole Wisniewski is also in the competition, but missed Monday's practice with a concussion. Unknown if Wisniewski would be ready for Friday at this stage.

Regardless, the Eagles needed another body at safety after the release of Gray. Mahoney could play cornerback based on his position listing, and may see time there with Jakorian Bennett and Ambry Thomas on the mend.

The Eagles have Isaiah Bolden, Shaun Wade, and Gushiken healthy. Mac McWilliams (shoulder) and Ambry Thomas (groin) are also banged up at cornerback, so the Eagles are just trying to get through this game.
