Why a Texans-Tyreek Hill Signing Makes Sense — and Why It Doesn't

The Houston Texans could get involved in the Tyreek Hill sweepstakes. But should they?

In this story:

The Houston Texans could be among the teams paying attention to the latest Tyreek Hill news surfacing after the events of Week 4.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the agent of free agent Tyreek Hill, Drew Rosenhaus, is setting up visits for the veteran wide receiver this week to begin negotiating a deal. Among those visits is his former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent the first six years of his NFL career.

It's a big development as it relates to what's next for Hill, who's been stuck rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered around this time last NFL season, and has been a free agent since his release from the Dolphins earlier this year.

So now that Hill's recovery has seemingly taken another step forward and ready to start talking to teams about a contract, it begs the question of where his next destination could be.

And in the mix of teams who could be in the race to sign Hill, the Texans stick out as a team who might have some interest in a deal. They're 0-4 on the year, have seen a few offensive ups and downs through the first four weeks, and maybe a signing of a five-time All-Pro could help alleviate those woes.

With that in mind, let's break down as to why a Texans signing for Hill might makes sense, and also sort through why a signing isn't quite as seamless as it may appear:

Why It Makes Sense: An Easy Upgrade to Texans' Thin WR Group

While the Texans did see their offensive production take a big boost this weekend with Nico Collins healthy and in the fold, this group could still use an extra, experienced set of hands next to their No. 1 in order to truly round out C.J. Stroud's arsenal better than they ever have.

And the Texans––if interested in signing someone like Hill––could see a much-different skillset within Hill compared to Collins that makes the signing add up even further. Collins is the more physically imposing jump-ball receiver, while Hill can utilize his speed and quickness to truly take this passing offense to the next level.

The last time Hill played a full 17-game season, it came in 2024 with the Dolphins when he recorded 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns. The year after, he played only four games before a torn ACL derailed his entire season.

So he might not be the annual 1,000-yard receiver he was in both Miami and with the Kansas City Chiefs–– especially post-injury–– he offers a layer of experience and proven production at the wide receiver position that Houston just doesn't have right now.

And for a team that sits 0-4, every avenue that can upgrade this offense should at least be explored. If the interest is there from both sides, the situation in Houston feels like a much better fit than many others in the league could provide for Hill.

Why It Doesn't: His Recent Injury, Prior Investment & Tank Dell

When it comes to a potential Hill signing for Houston, there are a few concerns that might arise within the Texans' front office, which ultimately might prevent them from seriously pursuing a signing.

Let's sort through them one-by-one:

1. The Texans could have some underlying concern about Hill's status and potential production post-injury. It was only a few weeks ago that Hill himself said that he had no power in his injured leg, and there's a chance his explosive quickness and speed aren’t near what they were in either Kansas City or Miami. If that's the case, then maybe signing him for the season isn't worth the trouble.

2. Houston has two noteworthy investments at the position outside of Nico Collins in second-year wideout Jaylin Noel and recent trade acquisition Kayshon Boutte. So if Houston feels as if they already have enough talent at the position, maybe they just need to scheme around them better instead of adding further pieces.

3. Tank Dell is set to see his practice window opened from injured reserve heading into Week 5, which tends to hint towards a return to the field being imminent. As Dell is just now starting to work his way into the Texans' offense, then maybe adding another pass-catcher like Hill into the equation isn't the most ideal setup for his return.

So the idea of adding Hill into the mix of this Texans offense is fun, sure. On paper, he’s an easy weapon who can add a dose of speed and explosiveness into a passing game that hasn't been the most inspiring through four weeks.

However, there are certainly a few more hurdles to his fit in Houston from what meets the eye. Knowing that, there might be better options that Hill turns to on the market instead––like the Chiefs––where he can have a bit more certainty and familiarity for how his role could look.
