Previewing Probable Pitching Matchups For Athletics' Next Series vs. Twins

After an upset series win over the Astros, the Athletics now look to extend their momentum vs. the Twins.

After losing the last series vs. the Twins 2-1 on July 24-26, the Athletics are looking to right their wrongs. The first step in doing so is understanding who will be pitching game by game and identifying any implications that could favor either team. Here are the matchups to watch.

Game 1 | Zebby Matthews RHP vs. Jeffrey Springs LHP

The Athletics should tread lightly during this matchup. Even though Jeffrey Springs is coming off one of his best starts of the season vs. the Royals, in which he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just five hits and two runs, his overall track record this season is shaky, with a 3-11 record and a 6.02 ERA. Keep in mind that Springs has allowed 29 home runs this season, which ranks fourth-most in MLB.

Like Springs, Zebby Matthews has been unreliable for the Twins, posting a 7-8 record with a 5.12 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. But in his last start vs. the Braves, he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and a single run. On July 24, he pitched in the Athletics' win vs. the Twins, giving up a measly three hits in 6.0 innings while allowing two runs.

Game 2 | Taj Bradley RHP vs. Gage Jump LHP

This year, Gage Jump is 5-8 with a rough 4.83 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. After a monster first half, Jump's production has jumped off a cliff; since the break, he is 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. While he has shown flashes, it has gotten very hard to trust Jump when he is on the mound. With patience for a turnaround running thin, we could see Jump pulled if cracks start to show.

Taj Bradley has been decent but not great for the Twins this season. This year, he has a 3.90 ERA with a solid 1.28 WHIP. In his last start, Bradley looked amazing, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one run and two hits. With a clear gap in production in recent starts, the Athletics could be in trouble in Game 2.

Game 3 | Connor Prielipp LHP vs. JT Ginn RHP

This is the only game in the series where the Athletics have a clear advantage with ace JT Ginn on the mound. This year, Ginn is 8-8 with a solid 3.60 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. In his last outing, it was a bit rocky, as he pitched 5.0 innings and allowed six hits and three runs. While not the worst start, Ginn has not looked dominant since July 18 vs. the Nationals, when he pitched 6.1 innings and allowed one hit.

As mentioned just a paragraph ago, the Athletics have the clear advantage on paper. Connor Prielipp is 3-7 with a 5.57 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP this season. In his last start vs. the Padres, he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed eight hits and six runs in the losing effort.
