Padres Roundup: SD Officially Releases Infielder, Considering Ethan Salas Call Up, Nick Pivetta to Be Cut?

The San Diego Padres dominanted the Milwaukee Brewers, 11-2, on Tuesday and improved to 64-57 on the year.

The fireworks started in the second inning as a Jake Cronenworth double brought in the first run of the game. After an eight-pitch walk from Fernando Tatis Jr. capitalized by a successful ABS challenge to load up the bases, Luis Rengifo hit the first grand slam of his eight-year career against the team that released him this past June.

The Padres continued to add on offensively including home runs by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Campusano. Walker Buehler pitched six innings of one-run ball and earned the win.

In other news, the Friars recently released an infielder who had been with the organization for three years. The 31-year-old was hitting .254 with five home runs in 42 games at the Triple-A level this season.

Additionally, it may finally be close to the time that fans have been waiting for as top prospect Ethan Salas is reportedly being considered as a late-season Padres call-up, according to team insider Dennis Lin of The Athletic via 97.3 The Fan's Ben and Woods

"One hundred percent, I see them considering it" Lin said of promoting Salas. "I don't know about it being a lock, but I think there is a very good chance he'll be up in September, and even maybe before then, because let's remember, if you want to have a player eligible for the playoffs, they need to be on the 40-man before September.

"So I think they are looking at it; he's only one call away, or one step away from the majors. They promoted him just a couple weeks ago, and not surprisingly, his offensive stats have instantly ticked up."

Salas is hitting .333 in his first nine games at the Triple-A level and is still just 20 years old. In 72 Double-A contests before his promotion, Salas was slashing .286/.361/.417 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs.

Finally, right-hander Nick Pivetta may be cut loose during the offseason as he continues to spend time on the injured list after making just four starts to begin the season. Due to a setback in his rehab, Pivetta will almost certainly be kept out beyond Aug. 22.

The significance of this date is that it triggers a clause in his contract that turns his player option into a team option. This can potentially translate to him losing the final $32 million of his contract over the next two years should San Diego choose to void it.
