New Bengals OC Dan Pitcher Discusses Run Game, Adapting in Season: 'Need to be Able to Pivot'

Cincinnati introduced its new OC on Thursday.

CINCINNATI — Dan Pitcher preached collaboration and continued innovation out of the offense moving forward in his first press conference as Bengals offensive coordinator.

One area that needs boosting is the run game, where Cincinnati ranked 15th in rushing EPA/play and 21st in success rate this past season (89.8 rushing yards per game, 31st in NFL).

"Being able to run the football is critical to offensive success," Pitcher said. "And what that looks like for every team is going to be different. That's something we'll look at over the next couple of months as we get together as a staff. We'll figure out how to put our players in the best position to be successful and we'll work on improving in that area as we will in every other area."

Pitcher played an integral part in getting Jake Browning up to speed so quickly last season. All in all, it was a very successful offensive season for Cincinnati given how many injury chips got stacked against them.

The Bengals finished 11th leaguewide in total offensive DVOA, despite having a healthy Joe Burrow for just a couple of games.

"Adaptability is something I believe in completely. You need to be able to pivot at a moment's notice," Pitcher said. "We've had a very good offense. We've dealt with issues this past season that made life harder on us than we were used to. I believe we have the foundation in place to be one of the top offenses in football."

It's fair to expect the Bengals to have a top-10 offense next season if Burrow is healthy for 17 games.
